This sound chip/board lets you upload your own MP3 files and then plays them in order when you push the included button.

A drill press was extremely helpful to create 432 holes!

I wanted something bigger than the greeting card speaker in the sound chip kit. This speaker comes in a 2 pack.

Fashioned two risers to hold up the sound board.

Will attach with epoxy. Cut hole for USB port with rotary tool.

Drilled .25" (7 mm) hole for the sound button. I needed to bore it out just a little extra to make it fit. I also used a countersink bit to soften the edge.

The model comes with no back! I happened to have some veneered board and cut it to size to fit the back.

I wanted the metal to be brighter so I re-primed with light gray.

Here is a trick a learned from reading a review of the kit on Amazon. In the film, the lens is NIKKOR. Since that is a trademark, it sounds like Moebius did not license it and thus omitted the R to make it NIKKO. However, they cleverly included a "Reset" decal that is not needed. Take the R from Reset and now we have NIKKOR.

Final wiring layout. Notice the precise application of epoxy with which I attached the lens assembly. Not my finest work.

Sprayed with final coats of Krylon Gloss Crystal Clear on the lens (prior to assembly); rest of the box is sprayed with Microscale Crystal Clear, which is not as glossy as the Krylon.

Mounted on the wall. Ah - I also added a little red button to make the button more push-able. For this I used a 1/4" (6 mm) piece of scrap plastic that I recovered from a shelving spare part; painted with a good thick application of Testors red enamel for nice, shiny appearance and durability.

Thanks, guys! @Roy, I would love to do the same. I considered it before I bought the sound board and even found that somewhere along the line a company was planning to make just that, but I don't think it ever made it to the market. It's too bad you can't replace Alexa's voice with Hal's! I was so excited to get the thing built that I just went with the simple sound board and some MP3s I found online. I may revisit the project later because having a real AI in there would be so much fun.

I'm at the beginning stages of learning electronics, and have yet to light a model, but have my first breadboard and am pretty good at burning out leds so far! It's pretty mind boggling when you don't know what you're doing! But I'm very inspired by your build. I have lots of starships waiting for me to light them up.. What's next for you James?

@JD I think I'm going to light up Colonial Viper MkII (Moebius Models 912, 1:32) next, but first I have to return to and finish AMT U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 Refit with Lights | Project by JamesWhite (1:537). I am still learning like crazy. I found Book: Make: Electronics (by Charles Platt) very helpful in getting started and learning about all the various tools, vocabulary. It also has a ton of example projects.

This kit is a quick build with only a handful of parts, so most of the fun is in painting, finishing, and adding a sound board and speaker.
