Nice work!!! One question: what paint have you used for the main P51 body?
11 January 2014, 11:42
Adam Carter
I used Humbrol 11 spray can and then dry brushed certain panels with 56 for a less glossy look. It's also got a coat of Matt varnish on it. Thanks for the compliments

Fabian D.
like both, your P51 and your idea of ceeping track what you´ve completed in this year... should do that too 😉

Nice build and it's a nice little kit. I made one using Alclad brushed alu as metal finish with pre-shading panels. That looks great but I think you can only apply it using an airbrush.

Clifford Keesler
Very nice P-51.

Every day I hear about this Alclad stuff, what is it? Is it toxic? Cos I only use acrylic cos we have a three year old
13 January 2014, 08:20
Roberto
Thanks for the reference. Until I know, Alclad must be handled with much care. It´s a pity because it gives you the best metal finishing in every model kit -much better in cars and trucks-.

Highly toxic is no good in our house! lol. My son likes to watch me paint and try and copy me in lego lol.

Also just realised its like a Humbrol advert in the background of this pic! lol

Adam mate...
Did they really have paint pots and glue bottles that big in WW11???😮
13 January 2014, 14:18
Jan Hazes
Alclad is toxic like other non acrylic paints and should be used is a ventilated space. An you should preferably wear a PPP3 mask unless you want to get high. So, not recommended with todlers around. www.alclad2.com

Hi Adam what's next?
15 January 2014, 22:17
Adam Carter
Hi Brandon, it's a toss up between a biggy, the Revell 1/32 Ju88, or my first tank, an AFV Club Nturion Mk5! At the moment I'm just finish a frankly awful Airfix F-18. What you working on?
16 January 2014, 08:08
Adam Carter
Steve, it's one of those things, everything was bigger years ago. Wagon Wheels were definitely the size of dinner plates!
16 January 2014, 08:09
Steve Wilson
Adam...
But is it because we were smaller then and everything looked bigger??? or...
Is it because manufactures make them smaller now for maximum profit???
I remember Curly Wurlys being massive!!!😮
16 January 2014, 08:46
kevin sarsfield
Bags of crisps were full with crisps not air
16 January 2014, 14:32
Steve Wilson
Aaaahhh!!! kevin, yes you're right, with little blue bags of salt...
And my Mum stuck a " Gob Stopper " in my mouth to shut me up.
Then some prat choked on one, so the power to be banned them!!!

And what about...
JUBLEE'S remember them???
It's where Del Boy got his saying, " Luvvly Jublee " from!!!

your getting better Adam,

Now I think its time you slowed took your time... and tried new techniques..
Filling and sanding seams..
masking canopys..

each thing you try will make you a better modeller

Augie you Jedi, your words are wise, so I will take heed.

Indeed, a little now fact about me is that I suffer from ADHD, I find the models focus my mind and allow me to calm down but I do find it hard to concentrate on things I don't understand (finishes, washes etc) but I will try. One quick question, say the f-18 I've just finished, if I spray it with a Matt varnish, allow that to dry, and then cover it in an enamel wash, how would I then remove the excess wash?
19 January 2014, 21:39
B
You would use enamel thinners, but spray it with a gloss varnish the wash will flow better. Once everything's dry spray over it with a matte varnish
19 January 2014, 21:41
Augie
If you paint with enamel.. dont use enamel wash..

the thinners will damage the underlying varnish and paint. Use acrylic or water based washes over enamel paints
19 January 2014, 21:42
B
Your P-51 is really good, but I think a burnt umber wash would make it look amazing

Third build of the year done, tried to take some time with a bit of dry brushing etc and a very mild wash to town down the silver. Great kit and the skis are ace!

Barry Lloyd
Third build of the year done, blimey - are you going for a record? You'll fill your display cabinet in no time! Still, there so many kits about these days, I don't think you'll run out of subjects!
26 January 2014, 16:59
Adam Carter
Actually trying to slow down this year! Lol. The cabinet is already full to bursting, I'll just have to get another one
26 January 2014, 17:17
Barry Lloyd
I'm negotiating with the missus to take over her china cabinet for my models!
26 January 2014, 18:02
Adam Carter
Who needs plates anyway?
26 January 2014, 22:47
Barry Lloyd
Exactly my argument, I think I'm getting one shelf!
27 January 2014, 07:32
Adam Carter
good lord man! put your foot down! any thoughts on the gladiator btw?
27 January 2014, 13:17
Barry Lloyd
I like the Gladiator from what I can see, and it's an interesting subject. My favourite is your Mustang though, it looks pretty good - do you airbrush or hand paint? It would be worth continuing to develop your weathering skills as it can make quite as difference.
27 January 2014, 21:43
Adam Carter
many thanks, i tried with this to have a go at dry brushing some detail (the cockpit mainly so not really visible!), if i wanted to put the wash on now, what would be the process? Its painted with acrylic spray and paint and has a coat of varnish on the outer. I still dont really understand how you get most of the wash off after
28 January 2014, 08:56
Jan Hazes
Make sure you use an enamel or oilbased wash on an acrylic finish. You can thin the wash with terpentine without damaging the varnish and get most of it off by wiping it with a piece of cloth or cotton buds. You can also reactivate the dried wash. Something that doesn't really work with for instance Vallejo acrylic wash. Once its dry thats it.
28 January 2014, 15:40
Barry Lloyd
When I first started model making I only used enamels as that was the only type available, and I didn't have any problems. Now that acrylics are popular, I find that its best to try weathering on a test piece first as using different paint types can result in the paint reacting with the previous coat - as mentioned by Jan. I've been trying one of the new Humbrol washes, it didn't seem to cause a problem when brushed over an acrylic. I'm no expert by the way!

They all look good to me.

It never ceases to amaze me the wealth of knowledge one finds on this site. As always, thank you mates
