Just wanted everyones opinion. What do you all think of Matchbox models? Never done one before, and am interested in doing so, but am unsure about them. Are they good? detailed? how do they fit? how are the decals?

Many thanks guys 🙂

Hi Megan
You mean old Matchbox stuff?
They were made by various manufacturers for them, what sort of subjects? Planes?

Megan Harris
Yes, matchbox (the brand), old vintage models. Well, im not sure how old they are. And yes, planes.

They were nothing more than the typical AMT kit, that was re-badged, for name recognition. Normally they just changed the decals and re-boxed an existing kit. Was the thing to do in the late 70's early 80's.

The Matchbox kits were well made, with modern tooling and techniques, but critics felt that the kits were too coarsely detailed[7] in comparison with other models on the market, and too "toy-like". Yet they were still just as complex and time consuming to construct as any other kit, which limited their appeal to more casual model builders. The company was unable to fully satisfy either the casual or serious model building market, and was one of the first companies to abandon model kits when the hobby started its decline,[when?] selling AMT to the Ertl Company and shutting down its own kit division less than twenty years after starting it.

They ain't bad as far as vintage kits go, no worse than say Airfix or Revell of the time.
Not like a modern kit tho, lots of sanding, filling, shit loads of glue etc but still good fun😉

What are you the the kit stasi ? Who cares, their debunked and the new tooling is a better way for builds, Matchbox brand is for collectors. Megan, pick one up on ebay cheap, and judge for yourself !

Megan, theres a few sites out there dedicated to matchbox kits

matchboxkits.org/index.php?cPath=27_39

is a good one and will give you some insight into the kits.

They are fairly basic but with some work they can build to nice kits. Think of them as kits to cut your teeth on and try things with.

Styrene, Please don't take this the wrong way, but you've come across quite aggressively where from what I've seen there was no need.

I remember having a few of these as a kid in the 70s. Fit OK for the time. Multiple colours a gimmick. They used the same guys who dug the Manchester Ship Canal to do panel lines though.

@Playtime:- Ahh yes, the matchbox panel lines.. renowned world over for their depth and width.

Styrene, please pipe down. I posted this as a genuine question, as im quite new to modelling. I didn't ask for such an opinionated and forceful response. So either respond civilly like the rest of the members, or remove your comments from my thread.

cheers..

Hey Megan,

If your looking for a fairly recent rebox,

Skyraider AD-5 (A-1E) (Revell 85-5327, 1:48)

85-5327

This is the matchbox kit, reboxed by revell (they bought the brand/moulds) and with new decals.
Fairly in-expensive.

Actual matchbox boxed kits these day do carry "collectors" pricing generally.

Ahh, i see he thankfully removed his comments 🙂 I don't know why anyone would want to start any arguments on a website like this!

It happens here from time to time, but if your into model aircraft, Augie is gonna be your new best friend, me and Munky are Muscle car guys, and I guess I would be the resident Police guy. We're all happy to help.

Megan...it was the gratuitous soft [****]ography that did it...

i objected and the soft [****] fans all weighed in...pretty simple...

...and now Tim has a nudity filter and the soft [****] quantity (not to mention quality), is way done....

Hi Megan. I did their Helldiver a while back. Plastic was good quality, finely molded simplified details, the fit was very good. One downside already mentioned are exaggerated recessed panel lines (not easily fixed). At this point, the decals are probably no good either. Unless you can't find the subject you are looking for, I would avoid. Just my 5 cents, best of luck 👍

I still have a couple of Matchbox kits in the stash. As has been mentioned, they are pretty basic with trench-like panel lines but most do build up quite well with some effort. Matchbox often made subjects no-one else would cover and they still appear in many cases as Revell kits (the Victor K.2 and DHC.6 Twin Otter are two that come to mind), although Revell make them as one-colour sprues in contrast to the two or three-colour they came in originally. Give them a go.

That reminds me - the plastic was very shiny but I cannot remember if there were any issues with it cos I wasnt much of a filler/sander in 1975 - just have suspicions 😄 Obviously re-pops such as Revell use their own plastic now.

Did you find a Matchbox plane kit yet Megan?
I was flicking thru eBay earlier today & there are a whole bunch of em starting at less than a tenner 👍

Styrene, I can think of only one reason you have decided to post on this thread again after so long and that is to stir it up again.

Kindly do not.
