Finally, into the fight, Zumbach flew and recorded a number of victories flying various 303 Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain. This project will build RF-F in which he shot down two Bf109s and 1 He111 in two days in late September 1940. RF-F was also flown by Sqn Ldr Witold Urbanowicz (which is the focus of the Hobby2000 kit).
The Zumbach record shows:
Sep 7, 1940- RF-B (V7242) 2 Do17s shot down
Sep 9, 1940- RF-G (R2685) 1 Bf109 + 1 probable
Sep 11, 1940- (as above) 1 Bf109
Sep 15, 1940- RF-E (P3577) 1 Bf109
Sep 26, 1940- RF-F (V6684) 1 Bf109 + 1 He111
Sep 27, 1940- (as above) 1 Bf109

In 1941, 303 Sqn were flying MkII Hurricanes. Zumbach’s record shows that on 13 October 1941, he shot down a Bf109, and an unidentified German radial engine aircraft. This was later identified as one of the first encounters with an FW190.

303 Sqn played a significant role in Britain’s defence during the BoB, and Zumbach certainly played his part...finally in the fight.

An inauspicious start to my first Heller kit. Either it’s the wrong instructions or the wrong sprue in the box.

I'm also building a Hurricane right now in the same scale. It's a IIc in Portuguese service but things look similar in the details as yours so I'm following along.

Thanks all for your interest. Rui I'm following yours. When I saw the detail I thought they may be the same tool, but his one is an old Hasegawa according to the timeline where as yours is a separate tool, but they're remarkably similar styles.

Gary… I'm sure the Hasegawa tool has a open canopy option that can actually be posed open. I just found out I a test fit the the two part canopy in the Academy kit isn't really designed to be open. ☹️
I also discovered the the effort I put into the instrument panel was a waste because it's buried so deep in the fuselage that it will never be seen.

But you know it's in there 😉
The Hobby2000 kit has a single piece canopy so not open. But I'm going to use the Part rear canopy with some acetate and try and cut the front section away from the single piece.
