Well..... i'm just starting with it, so I'm not sure how far I want to go with it yet!

No worries. I've got patience. 🙂

That's good! Patience is a virtue they say!
I haven't really taken a good look at it yet. I see that the raised panel lines are pretty fine!, re-scribe? maybe, not sure I want to take the time. I did glue together the engine cowls last night, 3 went fine, 1 was not aligned very well. At this point I'm painting the interior of the 54 Chevy, the primer is on the body, I'll let that dry for a few days before I sand it out. Next I'm going to paint the floor, then I'll get back to the Orion for a bit.

Looking forward to seeing the result.

Watching too 🙂 I have built a couple of these and have a few more to do.

Wow Ray...you'll have a fleet of them!
I'm gluing up the wings as we speak. Studying the panel lines I decided NO scribing. I just don't want to spend the time, it would take DAYS (weeks) of frustrating work! If the lines don't detail well then so be it. I have plenty of kits w/scribed lines, so to hail with it! I'll get enough practice just painting this one as it is pretty big. So far the fuselage & wing join look good. Only the 1 cowl so far. It is an older mold kit, so I guess I shouldn't expect too much, it is a relatively simple kit.

I am curious about the result, count me in. Cheers Stefan

These P-3's go together pretty well not much filler needed and the panel lines are very fine. Building straight out of box with little trouble. There's so many versions i want to get around to doing too! Don't forget to add a little nose weight! 🙂

Cheers to you Stefan!
Hi Glenn, yes, the panel lines are very fine. Everything has fit pretty well except for the one engine cowl. I'm just doing the cockpit now and it's pretty basic, decals for panels, and they're a bit oversize. But...not going to see much of it anyway. Actually adding weight in the nose would be easy, but I haven't decided to do it gear up or down yet. All those parts fit well so I may do it down, if so I might throw some weight in there just for GP. It will hang from the ceiling so not really necessary.

I have one of these as well. Will be watching and taking notes.

Nice choice, it's a big bird - you'll get plenty painting time!

Bryan,
I'm just an old guy got back into modeling & just learning myself, but you never know, I might pull out a trick or 2!! lol
Nazidk,
Yes, even more than I anticipated. I thought I could get away without painting the white since the plastic is white. But....I've just got the seams cleaned up, relatively easy and cleaned up real nice, but you can still "see" where the seam is so I'll have to paint the white if I want to cover it. Oh well, that's the breaks. At least it's just the top half of the fuselage.

Nice progress Robert, I have one on the bench at the moment, though I am building it as a P-3B (again) and attempting to resscribe it. Before you glue the wings on you might want to glue a reinforcing strip under the top fuselage seam where it is visible through the wing box opening. Sometimes that seam likes to pop open with handling. Otherwise it is looking good.

Ray you're braver than I am!... and thanks for that hint.

Robert, I'm not so young either! But I'm sure you'll make great effort at this one

Robert W Martel
Nazidk, us older guys will do the best we can with the time we have! lol
I just don't want to take "Months" building one kit if I don't need to, there's too many others I want to do. I'm slow as it is! So I'll take any shortcuts as I can, and not do things I don't feel are necessary for MY standards.
Now that Ray Seppala guy, he must be a younger fella, he's gonna re-scribe this thing! LOL.
I thought about it but when I thought about how much time it would take, the decision was easy...NO WAY!. I re-scribed one, that was enough for me, unless it's something "really special".
I did scribe a couple of mismatched lines on the belly of this one though...lol.

Sorry to rain on your parade Robert, but I am only 9 years younger than you. 😄 So no spring chricken!. Oh, and I have just about finished rescribing and filling in all the sonobuoy shoots and some of the pylon mounts. I suppose I should start a project here for it at some time as well. Been busy with a few other kits and only come back to the P-3 when I am waiting for something to set or dry.
The kit props are a bit average, I think someone did some aftermarket ones but I have never been able to find any. So I just fill the sink holes and paint and decal them up.

Ray, LOL. You're still braver than I am, I'm just not gonna re-scribe anything I don't have to! Yea, not much else to do with the props, nobody else is going to notice anyway

Ray Seppala
Your right about the props Robert. This is the first P-3 I am rescribing, I already have 3 others in the display case that were not rescribed, they are in my albums area. Looking forward to more progress.

Nice job on those Ray. I see you do a lot of airliners. They all look real nice!

Got everything clear coated today! In a few days I will do the last bits>put in the windows, try some panel lines here & there, etc etc...gittin there! Meantine.... I'll be workin' on the 54 Chevy.

Nice work Robert. Not to rain on your parade but the prop blades should be aluminium. The rest is look great! 👍

Thanks Ray,
Yea they wanted the props (2) different shades of grey (70% this+30%that) plus 2 thin white & 1 wider red stripe on the tips. NO, No, No, I ain't got time for all that! Like I said I'm not a big stickler for accuracy, as long as it looks good...... I could have done them aluminum, but now that I have the decals on..... Oh well. I should have it finished in a few more days & get the pics up.

I know that kit paint instructions can have crazy paint mixes. I usually try to find a picture of the thing I am modelling to see what the colours should be. I have seen a few instruction sheets (including some aftermarket) for P-3 and C-130 props call out strange colour mixes when in real life they have always been aluminium or steel colours. All good. Looking forward to seeing it finished 👍

yea, I'm not sure the seats would have been orange either Ray. Next time I'll do a bit more research, I've been going by the kit colors. Ah... they've all been practice so far anyway. I'm still not quite there as far as the finish goes...still waiting to do the "choice" kits. lol
Anyway, its finished and I'm posting the pics.
I'm not sure what's all the hoo haa about Hasegawa, I didn't find it to be any better than any of the Revell or some (certainly not ALL) of the others I've built so far. Fit was good, but some mistakes, so so decals. It would look real nice re-scribed. I tried the oil wash on the raised panel lines.... NO GO...so I did what I could. I'm not good at weathering, chipping etc, but I think she looks good!
Also got the 54 Chevy done and posting pics. Man, I wouldn't recommend that kit to my worst enemy....horrible!!!!!!!!

Nice job Robert 👍. You realise the original moulds are from 1980 for this kit, it was reworked in the 90s to make it an Update III aircraft. You would be surprised to know the seats are orange, though these days sheep skin seat covers go over them (on RAAF aircraft anyway). Even the sensor operator seats are orange as well. Nice to see it finished. Looks fine!

Thanks Ray, wow I wouldn't have thought! It's still the "finish" I'm not quite getting right, but I'll keep at it!

Album info

I chose this one for my next project for these reasons:
1) it will fit where I need it to go.
2)I got it fairly cheap $26 total.
3)it's an older kit w raised panel lines, and I won't get too carried away with it.
4)It's big and I'll get in some good painting practice!
It's a cool plane but not one of my favorites or one of the better kits.
I'm trying to save the best kits till I'm more confident with my painting.
