That looks just plain predatory! Laying low in the still calm water waiting for a victim

Nice job. If she's on the move there should be some bulge of water being pushed away by the bows, even in calm waters. But you knew that, right?

looking quite good

Thanks guys! @Martin: this is only the first layer. It needs 24 hours to harden. Later today I will create the ripple and when that is cured the (bow)waves will be added with a different product. Even though, as Chris already mentioned, she will be prowling a calm sea.

BEautiful work, very menancing

Thank you Scott! I really like the Oscar II's stance in the water, that's why I want to emphasize it sitting in the water this menacing way. I'm glad you like it that way. Now some light swell at the bow and at the wake will be added and only some light foaming along the hull and in the wake to give it the idea of slowly preparing to dive and loiter there unseen.

I did one in 350, just on a stand. One of my favourite subs since the Kursk disaster, such an interesting but sad story. Actually met a crew members widow, very touching. I've never tried the "In Water" scheme, it takes real talent. DId find one already cast in resin, but it was a Typhoon and just had to paint. So that is my only one in the cabinet in water. Yiu've done a great job.

Whauw! Thank you! This is actually my first go at a water scene and I'm amazed by how simple this really is. Just paint some wavy dark grey patches on the base, pour the liquid in and wait for it to become tacky and then stipple it with a brush. That's all! Now I'm gonna do the swell and the wake but that should be just as easy. Honest!

In the last two pictures some cracks are beginning to show. Does anyone know where these cracks come from and how to repair them??? I'm afraid I put on too many coats of Future or didn't let the Future fully cure... 🙁

i hope there is a way to fix those cracks.....

Me too... 🙁

On hull? Given we use future to fill microcracks in canopies could you use it gradually to fill those with self levelling properties then re matte coat it. Feel your pain

That might be a good tip Scott. I'll try that as soon as I have shown it to my local model club this Friday. I want to gather as many opinions before I try something. 😉

Patrick I've had that happen on a few of my models, sometimes it doesn't show up until weeks after completion, it's very frustrating. I hope you find the cure. If/ when you do... please let us know?

Patrick Hagelstein
Oh yes, I will off course!

Chris, did you use multiple Future coats too when that happened?

Patrick Hagelstein
Thanks James! 🙂

Hey Patrick yes I did do multiple coats, a few light coats usually followed by a wet coat seems to be the problem, light coats don't seem to crack but don't offer the smoother finish...

Patrick Hagelstein
Hmmmm.... That was my idea too! The first light coats stayed grainy so I gave it a wetter coat. That might be the reason. Now only the solution.....

What was it painted with, if enamels maybe can strip the future only?
6 April 2018, 15:14
Patrick Hagelstein
It was painted with Hataka lacquers over an Alclad II basic black coat. I don't want to strip it because it is surrounded/submerged by that acrylic sea. Either way, it was intended as an entry to a budget build as I bought the kit in a second hand toy shop for only $5. I have another kit in my stash and will apply my learning curve with this kit on my future project. 😉 If I come up with a way to apply a leveling dull coat, I will do that after masking off the sea. If not, I'll leave it this way and accept my defeat on this one... 😉

learning, is never a defeat....😉 is the seed of future victories

I member of my club thought it could be the wash reacting with the future underneath. He had that once on one of his models.

Spanjaard
what wash did you use?
7 April 2018, 05:57
Patrick Hagelstein
Weber Odorless Turpenoid with Winsor & Newton oil paint.

Album info

Just a quick project to put in as Budget Build for the OHMS Budget Build Competition as I got stumped on my BAe Hawk I planned to put in. The Tamiya kit fits like a glove and is very detailed. Painting hopefully brings out all those lovely details.
