The little Revell Fokker

Album image #1
The Eduard box contents compared to the Revell.

Album image #2
The OTB decals are a bit lacking in color and life is too short to mask and paint all of that!

Album image #3
After a bit of photo editing. I am going to print that onto decal paper and hold thumbs that it conforms.

Album image #4
A few new goodies to try out for the rigging. Very thin nylon mending thread and thicker polyester thread from the local haberdasher. EZ line is just too expensive for my tastes...

Album image #5
After about 18 hours of inkjet drying and a coat of Tamiya clear acrylic, the ink still wants to come off the transfer paper...?

This is going to be tricky. I will try again tomorrow.

Album image #7
There is no detail in the cockpit, so the pilot has to go in.

Album image #8

Album image #9
The WingnutWings representation of the same plane scheme is substantially different. I will take this as a more accurate scheme than the Revell.

Album image #10
The colours for the lozengers is tonally different. I am going to grab these colours for my homemade decals.

Album image #11
Much nicer.

Album image #12
The best tools I bought this year. (The files I got a few years ago, but I use them a lot for old kits like this one)

Album image #13

Album image #14
A bit more detail for the business end.

Album image #15
My attempt at a "strië" camoflage pattern. Brushed on layers of thinned enamel and then flatted down. Hopefully the clear coat much later will bring it out a bit more.

Album image #16
Finally got a decal to sit flat!!
It took two liberal coatings if clear acrylic varnish before the ink stops running or they curl up as they leave the paper.

Album image #17
Its going to take a bit of sanding out to put manners on this old kit...

Album image #18
Not so good...

I think I am laying Tamiya xf-22 varnish on too thick. I am going to try Johnson's Kleer instead.

Album image #19
That's a "no" to Kleer...

Album image #20
After copius microsol, colour mixing and brush patching. It looks okay from far, but the custom decals are a nightmare. Full of creases and not acceptable. I am sanding this down, more microsol to flatten the horrors and then more colour repair, clear coats, flatting and hopefully then done. Or bin...

Album image #22
Not the prettiest ever, but at this stage it's the best that it gets for this little Fokker...

It's getting there now. The decals need to settle, and then I am considering some post-shading with the airbrush. Risky business, so this one is not home and dry yet.

Album image #28
I was too heavy handed. This is after a wipe down with thinner... Disaster.

Album image #29
My best rescue attempt. I had to go even flatter with the white.

Album image #30
Humbrol enamels

Album image #31
Humbrol clear colors, which are actually cellulose, of which I had no thinner before I noticed things congealing when I tried to clean them.

Album image #32
Tamiya acrylic clear with a bit of brown mixed in. Too dark.

Album image #33
Flattened a bit with 1000 grit and clear coat. OKish, room to improve for the next Fokker.

Album image #34
I am not going to attempt any further airbrush post-shading. I'm still too much of a Padawan... Ready for final assembly.

Album image #35
The top wing sits too low over the fuselage, so the inner wing spars don't fit. Not by a long shot.

Album image #36
After heating the wing with a hairdryer and applying some pressure, the wing is bent and the inner spars fit.

Album image #37
And done!

I will do a proper photo shoot soon in a new album.

Enjoy your build !! I build the Revell OOTB some time ago, and you're right that it's a simple and old kit.
But I found it to be great fun for just 3,99 euro 😉

Looking forward to the Eduard build as well.

Yes, I built the Revel Sopwith Camel a while ago as well, and they are real skill builders...
I am fighting a fight with my custom decals on this one. Layers of MicroSol with 24hours between. I will hopefully have an update sometime soon.

Album info

I have both the Revell and the Eduard version of this model in 1:72.

The Eduard is like a Royals Royce compared to the Revell! I think I will start the Revell first...
