P-38j aluminium/red

Album image #1
The cockpit detail is acceptable in this scale. There are no decals but the raised detail is nice. I primed everything black and used some red paint and a aluminium drybrush to paint the details. After that I used clear varnish for a glass effect on the intrument panel. This cockpit was much like 1/72 scale academy kits and then I saw that this kit was indeed a adacemy design.

Album image #2
Not bad at all. I used a greenbrown wash on all green parts. I did use the seatbeld decals for the first time ever. I don't know yet if I like it.

Album image #3
The turbo super chargers can be added later in the build. So is painting is easier. I painted them brown and added a light post shade with dark earth. I then used a dry brush of dark aluminium for a metal effect. Clear varnish was added before the black wash the bringout the detail. I will still do more to it before I call it finished.

Album image #4
Some nose weight is needed. on a plane like this. The fit of the fuselage halfs is decent but a lot of clean up is needed because the seam lines don't line up with any panel lines.( This was not enough weight)

Album image #5
The radiator flaps have ejector pin marks and I don't know if you can see them. So better be safe and fill them.

Album image #6
Some of the parts are painted with the main color. I used vallejo metal colour white aluminium. Some of these parts are weathered with ammo dark night wash.

Album image #7
I primed the prop parts black and painted the cones white aluminium. The decals for the blades work great. I also prepared the cones for red paint.

Album image #8
The fit is decent and getting all parts lined-up is not hard at all. But the connection points do need some cleanup. I did add some revits and you can see that the gun sight doesn't have a glass.

Album image #9
I added a clear plastic sheet for the sight before I added the canopy.

Album image #10
Masking the canopy was a problem. The canopy framing is molded lower then the glass. So I desided to use liquid mask. I hope that the cleanup won't be to bad.

Album image #11
I used white alluminium as a main colour. I also use that for the rim colour.

Album image #12
The Instructions stated that some panels needed to be darker so I masked some panels and used dark alluminium to get a different shade. I paint white as a base colour for all the red parts of the scheme.

Album image #13
Not much red needs to be added. But some red decals will come later.

Album image #14
I added a black wash the air intakes to make them seem deeper. I also painted the anti glare panels on the engines. I should have done the nose also but i wanted to try the decal. That wasn't the right choice in the end.

Album image #15
The decals are decent except for the nose anti glare panel and The devil on the tip of the nose. I needed to paint some corrections to make it look better. Al other decals are great.

Album image #16
I clear coated the model to seal the decals and added Ammo Brown Green wash to all panellines.

I also used the enamel wash for streaking and staining. I do like the look of this and i will try to use this in the future. The wheels are also weathered.

Album image #20
The exhaust streaks are made with africa sand and dark brown.

Album image #21
I added some chipping to the black area's and the gun barrels are added. Good detail for this scale!

Album image #22
The final pieces are assembled.

Album image #23
The canopy masking didn't went wel but I could fix most of it with a cocktail stick and a bit of paint. But I didn't add enaugh nose weight so thats very unfortunate.

Still I'm happy with de result.

Album image #25
This view won't be seen again. I decided to glue the model to a base.

Album info

This is one of my favorite ww2 planes and this set has some great schemes. I will build a bare matel one. I still need to improve my metal finishes because I want to use the practise for a Mirgae 3 build.
