Hi Mates

I want to try to build my first 1:350 scale ship and there are two kits on the shortlist, which of these two kits would you recommend?

Thanks

Trumpeter HMS Zulu
HMS Zulu (Trumpeter 05332, 1:350)

HOBBYBOSS USS Arizona
USS Arizona BB-39 (HobbyBoss 86501, 1:350)

The Zulu is a newer kit. Should be a bit better (should, I'm not certain) and a destroyer is a bit smaller than the old battle wagon. Walk before you run 😉

Thanks Ahmed and Martin. I think you are right Martin, the Arizona is probably a to big for a first model in this scale. I will see with which one I will finally come out of the Model shop ?

Afaik, the Zulu destroyer doesn't come with photo etch rails. No idea about the battleship, but a review should reveal that.

A review of the aftermarket photo etch rails for the destroyer can be found here:

Thanks Treehugger for this tip.

I am back from the Hobby Store, is anyone aware about the TV Series "The Big Bang Theory"? Do you remember Sheldon Cooper and his dilemma of whether to buy an X-Box One or a PS4? I thought of this scene in the Hobby Store, only this time I was in front of the Arizona and the Zulu and couldn't decide
:-D

Finally, the Zulu has won 😉

for now... the Hobby Store is not far away

I thought the Eskimo kit (same as Zulu) was fun, but I never bought the photo etch, too expensive.

I suppose, given the kit isn't that large compared to a battleship, one could perhaps entertain the notion of scratch building the railings, if the rails are really wires and not firm railings, using thread for the wire portion. Maybe using bits of styrene rods for the vertical elements. Some rigging threads are made for shrinking, maybe something that offer some control and care when setting up the wiring. Haven't tried this type of rigging wire myself yet.

Thanks for your explaination. There is a photo etch in the box, but as you mentoined not for the Railing.

I found the below etch from Eduard, maybe this can be a possible solution?

Maybe. In some kits, the photo etch is included, but.. you can see that the photo etch is custom shaped to match the bow of the deck. Still, might look ok.

Though, you might want to check out other variants also. Unsure which is the best one. A problem is that, photo etched rails tend to look like fixed rails, while PE rails are used to represent wires that goes between rods up from the deck. Unsure what the rails looks like on those destroyers. Some photo etch show the wire sagging between each metal pole off the deck.

Tamiya has a product that lets you set up such poles and pull wires through the poles, but this is for the Yamato battleship so maybe doesn't look very British.
