I have a specific ModelMaker decal question: I’m planning to build Revell’s MiG-21 F-13 as a Polish Jet and came across this decal sheet „D72149 MiG-21 in Polish service exclusive edition part 0 Insignia“.
In the book „Polish Wings 24“ I noticed that there are quite a few stencils visible on Polish natural metal MiG-21 F-13 jets. Does ModelMaker also offer them as decals? In the ModelMaker online-shop I was only able to find the sheet „D72020 MiG-21PFM/M/MF/bis Polish stencils“.Thanks for any advice!

Hi Bernd. I have taken a look at available decal sheets and there are also the ones dedicated specifically to Polish F-13 type MiG's:
1.PLM "Warszawa" (Sagittarius3d 009.72, 1:72)
MiG-21f-13 in Polish service (ModelMaker D72003, 1:72)
Yet these do not contain stencils either, presumably. I suppose you can utilize the D72020 set here - the ones for the UM version, which was based on F-13 to the best of my knowledge... but I am not a specialist in military jets...

Thanks a lot for your reply, Robert! I've found a shop where the set "MiG-21 F-13 in Polish service" ist still available! One of the jets (red 809) depicted is apparently now on display at the Muzeum Lotnictwa Polskiego in Krakow, where I visited a few years ago. So that would be a nice souvenir! And judging from photos it doesn't seem to have any(?) stencils. So perhaps I should just forget about those stencils and concentrate on a varied NMF paintjob instead 🙂

All my pleasure, Bernd! 🙂 Actually, I have looked at all the photos of F-13 in my archives and it seems like you are right - I could not spot stencils at all! Perhaps there are some on the armament rails, but I am not sure about this also... Therefore, I think you can safely forget about putting hundreds of these tiny pieces of decal 😉 (And the fact that there are markings of the machine preserved in the museum is not a coincidence, I think - this is typical for Model Maker decal.) I have created few albums with photos from Polish aviation museums here at Scalemates, BTW. Take a look at them, if you wish 🙂

Robert, your albums brought back memories from my visits to Poland! Besides the Krakow museum I also know the outdoor collection of the Warsaw museum from another visit to Poland. In fact that was my first trip to your country and I went by train directly from Berlin to Warsaw.
As you have seen I'm now about to start the MiG-21 F-13 build. As you suggested I won't worry abour any stencils.
The next question concerns the correct colour for the cockpit. Early MiGs had dark grey/blue cockpits, newer versions and updated older MiGs got the well-known green cockpits.

So - if anyone has information regarding the cockpit colour of MiG-21 F-13 "red 809" from the Krakow museum, that would be much appreciated!

Dear Bernd, I hope this was a nice trip for you and you have good impressions and memories 🙂
I am not perfectly sure, but I would rather go for dark gray here - looking at the photo at the Museum site this colour seems more plausible:
muzeumlotnictwa.pl/z...php?ido=195&w=p
armedconflicts.com/MiG-21F-13-809-t123232
also, in the instructions of the Modelsvit kit of F-13 only this colour is suggested:
mojehobby.pl/product..r.html#gallery_start
Unfortunately, there is no "virtual look" into the cockpit of the F-13, but maybe you will find it useful the other day:
muzeumlotnictwa.pl/m..irtualne-zwiedzanie/
And here you can find the story of each F-13 that served in Polish AF (in Polish, but I suppose that translator will manage 😉 )
polot.net/pl/mikojan..cz_mig_21_f_13_2011r
I will take a look into my archives of photos taken here and there, nevertheless 😉
Best, Robert

Robert, thanks a lot for the links! I'll then go for the grey colour.
