Dave Flitton You bet. I read somewhere that you start with the Monogram but use bits from the Airfix to make it better. I already had the Airfix but read that it was not a good base to work from.

Dutch I am with you Dave, keep it cheap and mostly look like a BONE. My B-1 build costs less than half the $100+ price of the Modelcollect B-1 so I will be happy when it's done. There will be no eggregious errors. Carry on!

Dutch Dave, I thought to buy this and other Barracuda 1/72 B-1B update sets late last year when they first appeared, but cost curtailed my desire. I did find an old Cutting Edge Engine Nozzle set for ~$25 decided to stop there. I may buy the Barracuda wing glove & engine intake sets, as they require alot of work. As to the nose radome and tail cone shapes, i can probably live with them "as is." So there we sit at the moment. I have the decals, just need time, paint, glue and time. Did I mention time?

gorbygould Hi Dutch, I've noticed you have added some new projects – are you doing them all at the same time? If you are doing a B-29, a B-52, a Boeing KC-135 and a Rockwell B-1 simultaneously then you must have a work-space the size of a barn. My work-space is full doing a 1/48 fighter!

Dave Flitton I would have to clean mine just to get a 1/72 tank! I envy the massive spaces some get to build in.

Dutch @ gorby & Dave - No I am not building all these kits at one time. They are all part of my 366th Fighter Group / Wing collection. I had planned to do the large aircraft in 1:44 scale, but then found out that the FBW had a KB-29P / KB-50D squadron attached in 1954-59, so I had to add the Academy 1:72 KB-29P with decals from Expert's Choice. So as I did have decals for both the B-52G & B-1B of the 34th BS with MO tailcodes from Wolfpak in 1:72 scale, I decided I might as well go 1:72 for the big birds. I currently only have the KB-29 & KC-135R kits. Still looking for the B-52G & B-1B kits, so it will be awhile yet. While I do have a nice workshop in the garage, it too is so cluttered with other 1:1 scale projects, that I will have to wait for more of my two most precious resources before I start these: time & money!

Maciej Bellos Oh, the STM variables. Usually we lack one of those three (probably time), but sometimes it can be all three. I am reserving a seat for this sleek looking bird, whenever it lands on your bench.

gorbygould Thanks for replying Dutch. I'm also bogged down with 1:1 scale projects – I made the mistake of promising my wife some new illuminated display shelves at the start of the year. Are you going to do a KB-50 as well as the KB-29? I don't know if Academy still do their 1/72 B-50.

Dutch Well, the main idea was to build as many of the 366th FG / FBW / TFW / WG / FW aircraft [Dutch as I could find decals and kits for. I just recently determined that the 420th ARS was assigned to the 366th from '54 with KB-29Ps at Alexandria AFB, while also receiving KB-50s (apparently operating both types together) before transferring to Europe with the Wing in '55. While the fighters went to France, the tankers went to RAF Sculthorpe. Apparently, the wing returned to the states and the tankers stayed, but attached to a local unit. So I had thought to do the KB-50, but I would need the old DB or FP KB-50 conversion as well as the Academy kit, and it ain't easy to find either. Plus the B-50 is such a close relation to the B-29, I'll leave it go there. Thanks for the encouragement.

Clifford Keesler With all that resin hanging off of it, you might want to consider the SAC metal gear. LOL. I used lengths of cut up metal coat hangers, inside my gear struts to strengthen them.

Clifford Keesler I also cut notches in my wing glove(wing mounts) so that I could snap them into place once painting and weathering were done. That way I was not trying to handle the monster with the wings flopping all over, and it made assembely of the fuselage easier.

Alan Brown just some Ed Interior (49737) stuff in the front cockpit,(found out after starting that i was missing main front gear parts). there is not a lot you can see with it all sealed up in flight config, so i left out the resin seats. probably should have made sure i had all the landing gear parts before i started then i wouldn't have wasted the PE but you ebay and takes your chances i suppose..I know it in there though so that's something.

Cliff how did you deal with the lack of antennas? scratch build? or is this remedied in a newer kit? I'm missing like a dozen or so conformal antennas/ from what i remember. Also had a major fit issue at the rear empennage. (work work work ) any tips for future builds guys? I really want another go at this later with all the gear down and some inspection panels opened up.

Clifford Keesler Barricuda Studios makes a whole mess of resin parts for that bird. I used every thing they make. Resin wheels, update set, which includes the antennas etc. I also used the Eduard cockpit set. I did not have a whole lot of fit problems. The fwd fuselage required a small amont of putty, but I think that was all.

Alan Brown started the monstrosity... missing a front gear piece from the kit i bought so it looks like we'll be flying.... good thing too as I'm not sure that the desk has that much real estate

Alan Brown Hi Michael! be prepared for a lot of filler and sanding, this one was missing some gear and rotary launcher parts when I bought it second hand so it's in closed bay flight configuration but even so major fight to get the empennage and the cockpit and fuselage to all line up in a halfway decent manner, and even then lots of filler.. ill try to post some photos shortly thanks for checking it out!

Kevin Farrell We were at "Fair St Louis" in '97 watching the airshow fairly close to the arch. Pretty soon, most all of the performers headed over to Parks and it got kind of quiet. Next thing we heard was dull roar by the courthouse then we saw (and heard!) the Bone overhead at 500'AGL in delta config. As soon as she crossed the river, they lit 'em all up and all we could see were 4 rings of flame. A real crowd pleaser!

Clifford Keesler Thank you all. I have always loved the "Bone" I saw the B-1A prototype, and have seen the "B" many times at airshows at Scott AFB, Whiteman AFB, and Spirit of Saint Louis airport. I had the pleasure of converting the B-1 chase F-106A's and Bs" to Full size aerial target drones. I have decal sets for both and there will be a B-1 chase F-106A and B model on my display shelf at some point in time. They will be the new Trumpeter "106s" not the old Monogram kit, though it is still a nice kit. It is hard to believe that a strageic bomber can be almost as fast and manveorable as a fighter. And a high speed low pass in burner will defenitly "blow your Shoes off". LOL.

Jan Hazes Have seen both B-1s and B-52s pass low level over my house on occasion. Always in pairs. Impressive.

David Bristow Great build Clifford, I have long been contemplating this monster, but have been concerned over reports of fit issues and warpage of the wing / fuselage section. Is it as bad as I am assuming ?

Clifford Keesler No, actually it went tighter pretty well. The nose required filler, but I think that was my fault.

David Bristow Well on that recommendation I think my wish list will need to be fulfilled, I just love the lines of the BOne, will just have to think of somewhere to place it as you know it's a pretty sizeable bird.

Clifford Keesler I have all the eduard stuff except the exhaust. I have been hoping to find a reasonale set of resin exhaust. But no luck. I have thought about trying a couple of sets from the Revell F-15E,I have 2 sets of them, wonder if they would work?
