A dog's digestive must be incredibly robust. They eat crazy stuff. One of my dog's favourite food groups when she was a puppy was plastic (bad news for a modeller!) She has also injested aluminum foil, which also passed through without any effect. Now that she's older and not a puppy anymore, she is much better at just eating her dog food!

Finally uploaded most of the images for this project. A move delayed the postings of this WIP. Lost some progress images along the way. Most of the postings will show the Vigilante towards the final stages. Already painted and decalled for the most part. Really not a difficult kit, but a lot of parts compared to the Revell and Hasegawa kits in this scale.

Aeromaster Acrylic Lt Gull Grey 36440, Xtracrylic Gloss White was used for the scheme. Detail painting with Model Master silver, black, OD and steel for the various bits and pieces. Paasche "H" airbrush to apply the paint. Alclad for the bare metal sections. Thanks for viewing.

Ran into problems making my own decals (first time). Used the HOLI Decalpaper (both white and clear) and my HP inkjet with HP ink and microscales liquid decal film. There appeard a redish "glow arround the black lines (no matter on white or clear decal film) after adding quite an amount of micro sol when applying the decals (since the decal film is rather thick). Now what was my mistake you suppose? Wrong ink, too thin coat of liquid decal film or excessive amount of microsol? Thanks for your help. Regards.

Finished the bird with the wings folded and the size is still impressive. As mentioned i made first experience with making my own decals. I like the sleek lines of this jet. And am amazed there aren't more being on display.

11. May 2014, 18:08

Thanks. I think the brace is not a must. I stumbled over it when i was looking for their carrierdeck which i think its great and since i heard that you had to brace the huge body of this plane i thougt it would come handy and it did. It is designed for the aires burner cans which i wasn't able to get. So i had to modify the kit cans, which was easy to do, though. If you have specific questions feel free to ask. So long.

After a few months hiatus, time to update the Viggie. This session I assemble the LH side intake. Using Floquil Reefer White to paint the interior and spot the fuselage where the intake would cover it when installed. It would be hard get paint into that area if I don't. Also masked around the tailcone prior to painting that section which will be Steel. More to follow as I'm motivated to get this moving again. Thanks for looking.

I've always wondered how much the design of the MiG 25 was influenced by the Vigilante. The original design for the A-5 (then the A3J) had twin vertical tails. The Vigilante first flew in 1958, the MiG 25 in 1964.

How does this compare to the old Revell (which you've marked for sale) and the Trumpeter kits?
6. September 2012, 11:55
Lukas .
Kangnam is a same kit as Revell from late eighties. Basic kit with engraved panel lines. Trumpeter is much better ...but more expensive.

OK, that is what I expected, this is the old Ace kit. I have the Trumpy kit, and I was wondering if there might be something better.

The Vigilante has always been one of my favorites. Few realize how advanced of a design this was, and how it influenced future designs on both sides of the cold war.

Do you not like the Trumpeter kit?

Bill Gilman
Well, it's covered with rivets that need to be filled, the fin is the wrong shape for an RA-5, and the dorsal "hump" is too shallow. It's a later series Vigilante (although it has the early ECM pod on the tail), and can't be modeled as an earlier version, nor as an A-5 (different intakes and no leading edge extensions). The kit has bombs (almost never carried on an RA-5) but no drop tanks (almost always carried by an RA-5).

Maybe that's asking too much - the only real issue is all of those rivets! The Trumpy F-105 is the same way. C'mon guys - these airframes are smooth!

I would love to do an accurate RA-5, looks like I wil have to buy both kits and smash them together.

The Trumpeter kit is very nicely molded, better than any other available kit. The rivets can be filled, the vertical fin needs to have material removed from its tip (slanted not straight) and the ECM pod needs to be smaller. These are all easy fixes. The dorsal hump is a different matter. I plan on leaving it alone as it is unlikely to be noticed by anyone. Except for you guys who will now be looking for it! :) :) :)

This 'Ace' company it's not the Ukranian but Korean. Maybe is this tooling the origin for the Revell and Kangnam ones? It would be interesting to see a pic of the sprues.

The Revell Vigilante kit box said "Made in Korea" and I've read that it was made by Ace, along with the Yak-38 Froger, and Su-25 Frogfoot 1:72 kits.

Yeah this is the Korean company. I picked this kit up back in the 80's when it first came out. I started it in the 90's and plan to finish it this year. It is a good kit, simple, but good.

I'd buy that kit for the boxart alone, but be prepared for pronounced sinkmarks in nasty places.

If this is the same Revell Vigilante kit from the early 80s (whose only redeeming quality was that it had recessed panel lines) then just completing it at all is a major accomplishment! I binned mine about halfway through the build. Congratulations!
