Boy, where to start. A fair bit of flare on the spruces. Ill-fitting parts. Incorrect numberings on the rather small manual. strange parts, like a door that can be placed on the side of the fuselage, but that requires rough cutting. An enormous amount of connecting points (seriously? 18 connections on a push-rod-ring?) on certain parts in the spruce. Yarn for wiring is oke, but what about some holes? Ill fitting rudder. Not a pleasant building experience, quit halfway. I'd keep my €25 in the pocket and save up for another, better quality kit.

Cool, checkin in on this one for sure ! What do you think about the kit, Ben ?
7. June 2016, 10:47
Ben STONE
Very simple Hanno, very basic. I added a bit of a cockpit etc from a few assorted parts, didn't go to too much trouble. Fits together pretty well. What can I say, it's a cute and interesting little plane. I'd consider looking for a 1/48 kit down the track.

Thanks gents, it's a nice plane. Sorry Hanno, I meant it'd be nice to find a good 1/32 kit.

Red paint all done. There's a few irregularities from the masking, it might have to do as I think any repairs will probably be worse than the current result. Open to ideas if they don't consist of respraying :)

Nice work Rob. I'm doing the same kit at the moment. What did you use to mask up with when doing the red?
8. June 2016, 14:17
Rob Foellinger
It is a simple kit but due to it being a very elderly tooling, there were some challenges as far as fit. For the red areas I had to experiment a bit. I started with frisket film, but it wouldn't stick due to the ribbing on the wings. Then I tried MicroMask, and I'll never do that again, it was a huge pain to remove it after I was done. That stuff is junk. What I ended up doing was using Tamiya masking tape to outline the design and then trimmed it to match up with the lines that are molded into the wings and fuselage. Then I just covered the rest with regular masking tape. Good luck!
8. June 2016, 22:40
Ben STONE
I used Mr Hobby Masking Sol. Worked pretty well apart from a few irregularities, was very easy to remove.

I'll post some pics of the result. Not much different to yours, a but wonky in places.
I think the idea is to make sure it's applied reasonably thick. I put a blob on and spread it out towards my "line" with a tooth pick.

Looks good! It seems like liquid masks are not the ideal solution when you need a crisp line. But in cases like this with complex curvy designs it might be the easiest option. All in all, I'm glad I'm done with this thing because its a paint scheme I don't ever want to have to deal with again haha.
10. June 2016, 12:42
Ben STONE
Rob, to my limited knowledge his was the easiest and most practical way to do it. It's not a complicated scheme but it's a contrasted and exact one that stands out and any flaws are stark. There's parts of the "arches" that I've done that are pretty good, others that are a bit wonky or bumpy. When applying the mask it's hard to know just how exact it will be. To me it worked well. No masking tape constantly lifted, minimal paint peeled off removing any masking and minimal swear words were used when applying and removing.

Double?
https://www.scalemates.com/kits/146922-williams-brothers-32-426-gee-bee-z-racer
Seem to be the same in everyway (number and supplied box art).
The linked 'double' contains the better image and release info.

Different box- the CE part is missing on the other one.

I can't see it clearly enough - however I suspected that was a stamp of some type? Not a new box.
I tried to find a better picture of box art with a 'CE' yet seems to be none out there.
Not that that means it isn't a different box, just that the ten or so boxart pictures I found didn't have it, so if from factory, it is rarer.

They show as being from different years,,so, the newer one might show up more in photos online. The older one is "pre internet explosion days",,,,,also, shouldn't the Z racer and the R-1 racer have timelines independent of each other?,,,,,unless they are the same tooling and don't have the different parts in them, that is. If they have the same parts, then the 1987 release should be a rebox of the 1978.
15. July 2015, 01:33
Troy W
The 'CE release' would likely be a later release seeming as 'CE' is related to the Euro Union, and Williams Brothers is a US company, so while they maybe re-boxes of each other, the non CE kit should be the originating kit, no? There would seem to be more recent re-boxings (new art) for this kits too.
15. July 2015, 05:42
Rex
I'm discussing this only, to try to help out,,,,,,,,because I don't even know if the Red kits are from the same molds as the Yellow kits. If we knew that, we could fix that timeline, get all four kits on the same one in order, and call the last three the "re-releases", that would let the "19xx" kit fall after the first red kit, and before the 1987 (set as a "re-release" of the 19xx), with the 2009 as the last one (as a "re-release" of the 197 8)
15. July 2015, 07:04
Troy W
I'm also discussing only to help out - my comment was just to mention my feeling on the 'CE" which is currently marked as the new tool. If there is indeed to boxings with close art, my feeling is the CE is the later, as a discussion point only too.
15. July 2015, 12:41
H K
I only noticed the difference. I have no further knowledge of these kits.
15. July 2015, 15:37
Bill Gilman
The CE mark on the first kit above is a stamp from the importer "International Hobbycraft (U.K.) Ltd." It is the importer that must sign the declaration of CE conformance. Since this is specific to one importer and one market, it must be a stamp and not printed with the rest of the cover. My guess is that these are the same kits. They should be merged.
