Especially this one was tough. I also have the 1952 and 1953 versions in red. The bonnet fits much better on them, still not perfect though. Maybe because of the darker color.

The German Grand Prix of 1935 is remembered as Nuvolari's greatest victory, and arguably one of the most impressive auto racing victories of all time. At the time, German automakers reigned supreme in the world of race car construction, and the "home team" at the Nurburgring that July day consisted of five Mercedes and four German Auto Union vehicles, all of which overpowered Nuvolari's older 330 bhp (brake horsepower is a unit used to measure the power of an engine by the energy needed to brake it) Alfa Romeo P3. An estimated 250,000 to 300,000 spectators turned up to watch the race on that rainy, foggy July day, and drama broke out from the beginning, when Nuvolari's longtime rival, Achille Varzi, driving for the German Auto Union, hit an auto mechanic working the race.

With one lap left to go, the German driver Manfred von Brauchitsch in his 445 bhp W25 Mercedes Benz--the most powerful car of the day--took a 35-second lead over Nuvolari; the rest of the field, competitive throughout, had fallen behind. Von Brauchitsch's left rear tire was fraying, however, and with Nuvolari in hot pursuit behind him he declined a pit stop: The tire blew, and von Brauchitsch was forced to slow to 40 mph and guide it to the rim of the track. Nuvolari blew past him for the win, to the great chagrin of the Nazi Party officials at the finish line who had already started to raise the flag of the Reich and prepare the celebration.

Though Nuvolari would later race for the German Auto Union himself, that day he broke German hearts in his little red Alfa Romeo, beating the most powerful cars on the planet on one of the world's most demanding tracks.

never been an Auto union fan. there to, how should i put it. serious ? i don't get that warm feeling inside when i think of them. an old Alfa,Lancia,Fiat,Ferrari,Aston,Jaguar. that makes me happy. It must be either British or Italian to increase my heart rate. but with that said i do like the 911 quite a bit. but that's about it :/
7. June 2013, 16:03
Steve Wilson
That story though is about...
A little Alfa Romeo P3 getting one over, 9 of the most powerful cars on the planet at that time, proving the old saying " The bigger they are the harder they fall ".
Like you I ain't a fan of Auto-Union or dare I say, Mercedes...

And that's what we call racing with passion and love. I think i have that race recorded. note to myself, must sort thru my hard drives someday.

Fangio did it too...
Interestingly or coincidently however you see it, at the same track The Nurburgring in 1957, driving a 3 year old Maserati 250F. Beating both Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins who were both driving Ferrari 801's...

All these pictures were taken at the same GP F1, the 1953 Silverstone GP, won by Alberto Ascari. It's rare to find so many color pictures of this period, so I'm pretty pleased to have them. But at the same time there is something puzzling me: the wire wheels of the Ferraris (not just Ascari's car) seem to be some kind of green/blue instead of the standard metallic color. At first I thought it was an error of the colors in 1 picture, but I see this on all color pictures. I have never seen this before. Anyone any idea what this is about?

Also, I noticed that the race number '5' is black on a white roundel, but only on the nose. The rear shows white numbers '5' without roundels. This is where the kit went wrong, because there are only black numbers on white roundels in the kit. I will have to correct this error...

Awesome work Pascal, your build is a perfect exercise into why I love these kits so much...
People say to me, Gosh aren't they expensive??? I reply, if you know nothing about modelling, then yes maybe!!! But they are complete, buy the kit and you have everything and more in the box, no need to buy any expensive aftermarket paraphernalia. 8)

Riet D, Alexander, thanks for the nice comments.

Small progress today with the low body painted in red.
I've tested a low sheen clear coat on a rough part painted in red (a part of a 312PB).
I'm still wondering wether I'll use 2K or Low sheen to depict the 1951 paint finish...
I've also work on the exhaust. I didn't like the rear end of the exhaust provided, so I machined a new one in a piece of aluminum.
The original "pipe" was cut off and replaced with the new one.
More to come soon I hope.
17. February 2013, 19:16

Just few words to tell you that as I wasn't really happy of the result of the opened louvers on the lower part of the body, I ordered a new part to redo a better work.

Forgot I had this, found it hidden away in a cupboard in the loft. I found some other stuff to sort out as well. It's amazing what one forgets is in their collection. Anyone else have this problem???
24. January 2013, 18:33

Yes, Steve, but I don't see it as a problem.
Whenever I find a kit, which I thought I didn't have, it was a feeling like Christmas and Eastern together :D , but.... that was before Scalemates.
