Creative work and interesting photos! I served in a "Mad Dog" battery and still remember well the whining sound of the engines ........... 👍

Before I was in the 8 inch battery, the unit was a 175mm gun battery (USMC 1st 'guns'). It was converted to the 8 inch battery in early 1978. The 175mm gun had an amazing range using the maximum powder charge, but almost always vibrated the gun apart every time it was fired.

Our battalion had 3 batteries of 175 mm guns and one battery of 203 mm guns (ready for atomic shells). We had 3 different sizes of charges. With the largest charge the maximum range of the 175 mm gun was 32 kilometers. As this largest charge was considered a barrel buster we only used the smaller charges when practicing with life ammunition.

Album info

Pictures of the M110A1 8 Inch Howitzer that I was a crew member of in 1980. I used these as reference to scratch build the diorama. The photos include some taken in 1981 via a 35mm SLR with a micro lens and others taken recently using a Digital camera. The older pictures are very much color shifted to the orange.
