Dogfights - F-86 vs Mig-15 Korean War

Album image #1
Found this airfield tarmac image that I really like that was published as a free download. It really makes for a nice display base for this project I think.

I used Vallejo Silver onto a black primer. I'm not sure if it was a function of my painting, or the depth of the panel lines, but the Tamiya panel line wash didn't run along the lines, so I had to resort to line shading pre- and post-painting.

Decals were set over a gloss coat with Micro Sol and it really laid the set down well. Trumpeter did okay with the scaling I think, but the directions left a little ambiguity and reliance on external resources.

I left the canopy off during the paint and therefore hand painted the rails.

Getting the speed brakes to align was a bit fiddly and had me reaching for my CA insta set spray. I think I could have done better with the detailing in there, so I won't show ya.

Undercarriage washes didn't show very much but okay.

Album image #8
For the Mig's paint scheme I hand painted the brown and green over the airbrushed tan and a Tamiya fine gray primer. Lastly, I airbrushed the underside.

Album image #9
I used panel shading, followed by Tamiya panel line wash, but it got washed out on the greens and browns. Maybe that's a realistic look. I did use the canopy mask and it worked fairly well with only a little cleanup with a tooth pick.

Ugh, tail sitter. I failed to add enough weight far enough forward to address this early in the build. Oh well.

Album image #11
I liked Eduard's wheel well detail. I wish I could have done more with it.

Two adversaries. Very nicely done.

Album info

I was inspired by rereading stories of air combat in the Korean War and I decided over the summer to add these old warriors to my 144 airshow. I selected the Trumpeter model 01320 F-86F and the Eduard #4445 Mig-15bis set for this build. I weathered the kits with Tamiya panel line paint and I'm pleased with the results. Unfortunately, I failed to add enough nose weight to both kits and the Vallejo airbrushing of the Saber, while it may fit with the weathering, didn't turn out as "smooth" as I'd hoped. I'm sure there are other things I could have done, but this is as good as I get these days. Hope you enjoy them.
