1944, Ukraine: A couple of coupled cattle cars sit on a siding waiting for their engine. Ukrainian civilians and refugees are being put on the train cars to be sent to a forced labor camp (they hope). Civilians mill around the cars with their few belongings being watched by bored Wehrmacht (Hugarian troops maybe?). The focal point is a couple and their toddler pausing on the ramp up to the car to look at their homeland. On the road nearby is a column of tired Germans heading to the front, while a wagon with wounded heads to the rear. This one is an elaboration of a story my dad told me. The toddler is my dad.
