Jay Dubya Looks like this kit is not a lot better than the awful Airfix one. That said, good job so far Norm.
29. May, 05:11
Norm Sheppard It will make a nicer looking Comet in the end but it is easily 4 times the work. The decals are wrong too. Instead of white markings they are printed in silver.
29. May, 22:37
Oleg Smilyk Lovely progress,lovely plane!
1. June, 18:20
Norm Sheppard Thanks, Oleg.
1. June, 18:51
Cuajete Good news... another Comet!!
And it's having a very good result.
1. June, 19:12
Norm Sheppard It is such a graceful aircraft.
1. June, 20:18
wilky Just had to Google this aircraft to confirm my knowledge of it.
Only three made and sold for a discount price of 5000 pounds.
Commissioned just to win the race to Australia.
Then there were another two built later on with one being a Mail version for France
Thankfully two still survive.
Black Magic was lost for forty years.
It's currently being restored.
Maybe the green one is still out there somewhere
2. June, 01:17
Jay Dubya Small point of historical fact Willy, but the actual winner of the air race, albeit on handicap, was in fact a KLM DC-2:
https://aarg.com.au/douglas-dc-2.html
And that was after getting lost in the middle of the night near Albury (requiring the whole town's street lights to flash in Morse Code: A-L-B-U-R-Y).
2. June, 05:44
wilky Wilky, not Willy
I did know that I just forgot to write it in there
2. June, 05:49
Jay Dubya Sorry Wilky - I'm bravely going to blame my phone's spell checker!
2. June, 05:59
Jay Dubya @Norm - sorry for hijacking your thread for a bit.
@Wilky - not sure if you've seen the Movietone film of the race, but the acceptance speech is hilarious.
https://qz.com/india/1565273..-undoing-in-a-1934-air-race/
There is also some great footage of the various competitors and their planes.
2. June, 06:06
wilky Yes, I've seen a movie at the State Library and have a YouTube video of it on my channel.
You must write Willy too much

Thomas Kolb Thanks for the tip! Yes, heat-stretching sprue for delicate details is something all modelers should be familar with. You can actually make pipes and struts, much thinner than what can be done by molding.

9. May, 19:25
Cuajete Very good paint finish. I like the solution you have applied for the canopy studs. I hope I can have a similar solution for the one I'm doing.
Congrats!

...and this is my vote!

Dude...this is awesome.
9. May, 22:07
Norm Sheppard I have been building models since 1960, and enjoy every minute of it. Thank you for your kind words, they make me feel very good! And I am glad I was able to save many of my old aircraft models.

Spanjaard Looking good indeed
14. May 2019, 16:00
Alec K Great progress Norm. This will be a BIG bird, hope you are adding on a room for it... About those brain farts: I worry about those too, until I think back about all the doozies I performed as a young-brained lad. Sometimes I think that attainment of wisdom is just nature's way to keep the snafu frequency constant throughout life :D
12. February, 15:28
Munkyslut Ahh mate this is just incredible!
I really enjoyed my Airfix 1/24 Spit, appalling fit & moulding issues aside, this is so many levels above my modest efforts though
The detail in that cockpit is simply staggering!
12. February, 15:44
Norm Sheppard Thanks for the compliments guys. I have been building for 57 years now, and finally retired from daily labours, so the output will move up a notch. It is truly a horrible kit in many ways but the shape is definitely right. And it is for a customer, so I don't have to store it afterwards!
12. February, 23:19
Augie very nicely done! I know the pain of this kit so really this came out well!
23. March, 00:06
Munkyslut I agree with Augie, this bird looks fantastic ;)
23. March, 00:13

gorbygould Lovely end result from what looks like a very basic kit.
12. March 2017, 15:56
Julian Herrero aka Yuri I agree ... very good result !
12. March 2017, 16:01
Norm Sheppard Yeah, the clear parts were horrible, so I filled them in completely. The decals had blacked out areas for them. It's a really old Hawk mould from the late fifties I think.
12. March 2017, 16:59
Łukasz Gliński Lovely, it couldn't look better
25. March, 18:35

Łukasz Gliński Wow, I'm so jealous, it's so hard to get one tagged with a reasonable price and shipment cost. Yours look great, it deserves more pics for sure.
25. March, 11:22
Norm Sheppard That was the first one I built, commissioned by the son of the pilot who perished in the crash. it is in a previous project in my profile. This one is for an aviation archeologist friend of mine.
25. March, 14:27
Łukasz Gliński Then I'm looking forward to seeing more of both of them :)
25. March, 14:28
Norm Sheppard I will start an album in the next few days.
25. March, 14:30
Alex K One may ask if the aviation archaeologist friend in question was involved in finding the original escape hatch... (I just saw the album of the first model). Brilliant work - much respect for dealing with such subjects. Cheers.
25. March, 16:44
Norm Sheppard Yes, that was him. He and I have excavated several crash sites here in Canada together. From wartime DeHavilland Mosquitos to F-86 Sabres and airliners. Very interesting stuff.
25. March, 18:22
Alex K Interesting indeed! Chapeau!
25. March, 19:11
Norm Sheppard Also a Grumman Avenger used to spray the Spruce Budworms in 1953. There are lots of crash sites here in New Brunswick. I dug up an Avro Anson Mk.I just 10 minutes from my house.
