Patrick Hagelstein Hi Robert! For those dimples just use a no.10 or no. 15 scalpel. That way you can incrementally shave de dimple next up to the nearby details. Sounds hard to explain but just don't use any sanding sticks instead or the details will be lost.
16. November 2016 at 05:47:38
Robert W Martel I gotcha Patrick! That's pretty much what I did. I covered the lines w/Dymo tape, shaved the dimples as you described then used a soft 600 stick just to clean it up. It didn't take much at all, and they came off pretty well. Thanks mate!

Patrick Hagelstein You're welcome!

Ray Seppala Watching with interest Robert. I have a 1/350 Nimitz (and Intrepid) to build but might have to have a go at one of these smaller builds to see what I am in for!
19. November 2016 at 22:41:59
Robert W Martel Ray,
From what I see so far bigger parts are easier to handle. Lots of SMALL parts here. This is 1/800, but a big ship. It's quite a bit bigger than the 1/700 Trumpeter Hornet cv8 for example. Personally I wish I had room for the larger scales, they'd be easier (?). I do have a few of the larger scale Revell's, but the detail is weak compared to the newer Dragon, Trumpy, HobbyBoss.
Ah well, we'll just see how it goes. I'm still having fun!!

Actually a pretty nice kit, relatively easy to build, but the decals sucked (again). That's 0 for 3 for Academy decals. It looks great though. Next one I'll paint on the deck stripes.
I liked the fact that it had lots of planes, but when it came time to put them on the deck there are way too many. I had 18 left over! If I had put them all on the deck would be completely covered.
8. January 2017 at 01:54:49
Calvin Gifford Very nice job! Glad Academy isn't stingy in giving their carrier kits aircraft! Since the model depicts the Kitty with the Terrier Missile System, you can leave off the S-3's and F/A-18's - those aircraft did not grace her decks until the Terrier System was replaced by the early Sea Sparrow System. :)
21. November 2018 at 03:23:12
Robert W Martel Thanks Clifford, Yea they give you tons of planes. Besides what's on the decks there's a handful left over that might be able to be used on something else. Heck I wouldn't know the difference between the missile systems anyway, but thanks for that info. I'll keep it in mind when I build the next one.
The Academy carrier kits are pretty decent for their price, I have 4 more.
Have a nice holiday Clifford, I'm hoping to get back into it soon after, next year!

Robert W Martel Hey Clifford !!
I've been out of touch on scalemates for a while. Moved into this senior apt in Sept, but haven't been able to get back to modeling quite yet. It's driving me crazy. I've built 1 model this past year. I'm getting close, but it will be a few more weeks at least. I have a lot of catching up to do, bought lots more kits, need to get them in my stash. Too much to do, and I don't seem to be getting much done each day! It's going slower that I had hoped, I'm just dying to get back in the groove!
How are things with you?
30. January at 19:22:59
Calvin Gifford I'm doing pretty good. Not as difficult to keep warm here in SoCal!!

Robert W Martel
I haven't done any modeling for months and months! Finally got called for an interview at the senior housing apts. in Lodi. I hate moving !! Have moved 3 times this past year ! I'm thinking this will be the LAST time!
So, I've been here about a month. 550 sq. ft. doesn't sound very big, and really it's not, but it's big enough for me to move around in. Only problem is,,,,, even if I lived long enough to build all these models there won't be room for them in the apartment! So I'm going to have to thin them out some. I'll be putting most of them on ebay under bobster0001 if anyone wants to look.
I kinda like the place, it's quiet, all OLD FOLKS, LIKE ME !! Yikes !! It's all new, small enough to keep clean, big enough to roll my chair around,,,,do some modeling, and plenty of storage space.
I'm just beginning to get organized, so it will be a while yet before I get back into the swing of it.
But, watch out, I'll be going at it hard once I get set up. Give me a month or 2!

Robert W Martel Now I remember why, when I as a kid why we avoided the Jo-Han kits like the plague! When the Revell & AMT kits were $3 the Johan's were $1.29. They were just CHEAP kits. Unless it was of a car I really wanted, they did cars that the others didn't.
To start with it is super simple with very few parts, detail is ok, but things just aren't as good as the others.
I spent some time polishing the glass and got it looking pretty good, but when I went to put it in it fit so poorly and was so thick that it split the vent cowling under the windshield, Bummer! I spent hours sanding and polishing it (again) thin enough to fit! And the gaps in the lower corners are atrocious!
They all come with the same steering column mounted combination tach, shifter & blinker switch (chromed). This car had a t-handle floor shifter, but it was not included, even though there was a hole in the console for it. So I cut the shifter off the column and put it in the console.
The engine has no carb, the air cleaner sits on the distributor cap and if installed as designed the snorkel would point to the rear!, no radiator hoses, no outside mirrors, no antenna, pretty crummy looking whitewalls.
The basic detail isn't bad, it's just lacking the finer points, chassis is all molded as one piece as is the interior tub.
It really doesn't look bad, just lacks the finer details. When it's the only thing available for a certain car, there's not much choice but to grin and bear it and do the best you can with it.
I'm happy with it. I knew what to expect from the start.
It's another car that I had back in the days, and I'm just happy there was any kit for it at all. Now, the one I'd Really Like would be a 64 Olds Dymanic 88, but have yet to see any 64 Oldsmobiles, period.

Tom Ballhoff Hey, looks nice and sexy your car!
11. June 2018 at 18:20:53
Robert W Martel Thanks Tom. If it was a better kit I probably would have put a bit more effort into it. And it was a car that I only had for a very short time and didn't really care much for. They were great looking cars though, back then ! Cheers
12. June 2018 at 01:06:53
Tom Ballhoff Hi Robert, I always see that the old rarities certainly have their charm and as such in this day and age of perfectionism can be built just like that, without much etched parts, etc.
12. June 2018 at 09:46:34
Robert W Martel Yup! gotta work with what ya got. I have quite a few OLD kits of cars that I had. There are PE for a few of them. Mainly I want just the scripts like for my Windsor project. I have found LeMans scripts for my 64 & 68 GTOs, and a few others I can use maybe, but it seems they only make for the real common ones!

Robert W Martel This was a real sweet car. I think I paid $65 for it in 1969-70 when I was a junior or senior (??) in high school. Mine had the single headlights. Early productions had duals as an option, later they were standard. I remember it had a posi rear end and was a real tire smoker! And a great looking car !!

Robert W Martel My dad was cook on the USS Waller during the Korean War. This is about as close as I can get. The Waller was a Fletcher class ship converted to an Escort Destroyer DD 466. With some PE it should look better. One of the reviewers also did it as the Waller. I'd really like the new Revell kit, but it has the early round bridge. Maybe they'll issue the next step square bridge soon, but this will do until then. Its an oldie!!

Robert W Martel I've literally been searching for this for nearly 5 years! Maybe I just wasn't looking in the right place(youknowwherebay)! This is the first one I've ever seen. It look pretty decent. I went to HL the other day and bought the new re issue 62 Pontiac "Gasser II" Kit as a donor for the chassis, engine etc. The chassis looks almost exactly the same, should be able to make it work. It has a separate frame, suspension & exhaust, that will make it that much nicer.
I had this car back in the 70s and it was a great car. Also had a 63 Bonneville 4dr Ht, both nice cars!
Another Project in the lineup. Yikes
