AREA 88 : "Break The Big Leg" (B-1A)

Album image #1
I bought this kit for an Area 88 project...

Album image #2
But... I had an idea...

Album image #3
Here are the two kits that will be taking part in this effort.

Album image #4
First, we cut off the back end...

Album image #5
Then we cut off a front end,,,

Album image #6
Then we tape the hell out of it... and add a little plasticard to cover the gap.

Album image #7
Obviously pretty rough... but it already looks an awful lot like the Carreidas 160.

Album image #8
Oh, and we also can make one of these... I hear egg planes are all the rage...

Album image #9
I think I’m going to have to cheat on the cockpit a bit...

Album image #10
I don’t like cheating... so I changed my mind. Let’s switch back to the project I bought this kit for in the first place... Saki’s B-1 bomber from Area 88!

Album image #11
Scribed some of the bottom panel lines... this could take a while.

Album image #12
Took a break from the panel line scribing to make some corrections to the cockpit.

Album image #13
Back at it... more of the panel lines on top done, but still more to go.

Album image #14
Moved on to the wings. Why does nothing line up?

Album image #15
Getting close, but still more to do.

Album image #16
A bit of paint to prime and cover the sanding brings out the defects still to address.

Album image #17
Now that the sanding is complete, it’s time to box in the engine nacelles.

Album image #18
Lots more sanding here. The walls need to be a lot thinner.

Album image #19
Hello Saki and... co-pilot!

Album image #20
Almost ready for take off!

Album image #21
A few more details and the cockpit’s done.

Album image #22
Of course, we need some engines for take off, so I wired up a couple of LEDs.

Album image #23
Drilled a few extra holes for the wiring.

Album image #24
Yep. It works. Yay!

Album image #25
Some primer on... i suddenly start seeing all the defects.

Album image #26
The panel lines are a bit rougher than I’d like.

Album image #27
Some under shading. I used grey instead of black to lessen the intensity.

Album image #28
This will take a couple of coats to get right...

Album image #29
Is that white enough? I’m going for a very subtle undershade... but how subtle is too subtle?

Album image #30
Alright, all done. Finished painting and then added a coat of Future.

Album image #31
Then I picked out all the lint that was stuck in the Future and hen added a light grey panel wash. Just a few decals left to add.

Album image #32
And we’re done. Decal on the tail needed a few tries, but I go it.

Album image #33
Also added a decal to the base and an on-off button for the afterburner LEDs.

Album image #34
Now on the part two... the F-4E Phantom II...
