Album info

This is the Aoshima 1/72 N1K1-Jb Shiden Type 11 "Rex" kit. I picked this up for $5 at a model show earlier this year with the idea that it would be a quick and enjoyable build. This is my first build of a Aoshima kit and it had pluses and minuses.

For this this build I did not use any primer on the outside of the aircraft. Instead I used Gunze or Tamiya paints thinned with Tamiya lacquer thinner. This gave me the adhesion right to the plastic that I wanted.

The cockpit was sparce but under the canopy in 1/72 aircraft you cannot see much anyway. The surface detail was very nice with engraved panel lines. The fit was good everywhere but the area where the rear of the lower wing joins to the fuselage. There was a noticeable step but some sanding and rescribing took care of it.

The major disappointment was the quality of the decals. Even they would crinkle up if I used solvaset and if I used anything less strong they would leave silvering. I found this out on the wing decals. I ended up using some
