Vladimir Kafka a short intro: I have the Hasegawa F-86D, which is a perfect, beautiful kit except for, a) the decals - typical Hasegawa issue with creamy color instead of white and thick, yellowing decal film, and b) very simple cockpit with panel details as decals.
And then a Special Hobby F-86L, a crude shortrun, but with nice photoetch and usable decals (well, at least for 2 out of the 3 variants - more on this a bit later).
Therefore, my plan is simple -build F-86L using the Gawa kit and longer wingtips, decals and some of the photoetch from the SH kit.
I bought the SH kit quite cheaply on a modelling show a couple of years ago - an unfortunate impulse purchase - so I dont mind throwing the rest of the kit to recycle bin, where it rightfully belongs. I wanted to use more of it, but I found out that basically all small parts are just shitty copies of Hasegawa parts anyway :)
Nevertheless, I hate to say it but it's probably still worth it even for full retail price just for the decal sheet (all stencils included), just because aftermarket decal variants for Sabre Dogs are so limited.
31. December 2017 at 00:41:22
Vladimir Kafka As for adjustments - I am going to leave the vortex generators alone, I guess I am not crazy enough to apply the SH etched ones. There is 95 of them on the fret (perhaps some of them are spares...).
As you probably already noticed, I am scratchbuilding leading edge slats in open position.
I recall reading somewhere that on Sabre Dogs slats were sometimes fixed with a tape in retracted position to prevent freezing and/or dirt coming in. But truth is, that apart from a few museum machines I have never seen a photo of a parked F-86D/L with slats retracted. So I want my model to look "natural".
Realistically, I am going to spend most of my willpower on this :), so apart from that, no superdetailing will take place.
The rocket "drawer" will remain closed (even though it's often seen lowered on photos, but far from always), perhaps I will add a small bit of stuff to cockpit.
I will have to rivet the whole thing, even though I hate riveting, on this airplane it could be hardly ignored. I am not going to add each and every rivet though - I will try to go by the photos and add just those more prominent lines.
31. December 2017 at 00:55:29
Vladimir Kafka As for decal variants, the one with green trim and stars/lightnings is unusable - the yellow lightnings are printed right on the green background, so as one would expect, yellow ended up as something like zinc chromate shade instead :(
The other two variants look good though, accurate (as far as I can tell), good register etc.
I still hesitate between the Easy Valley Girl (Calif Air Guard, dayglo trim) and the USAF one (horshoe emblem, blue trim).
Which one do you guys like more? :)

Gordon Sørensen Great job on opening the slats, Vladimir! I am trying something similar on an Airfix F-86. I would go for the Cali ANG bird, interesting contrast between the NMF and Dayglo Orange...

Vladimir Kafka Alexander, thanks!
I have no secrets at all :) Paints you can see on the picture - Tamiya acrylics. Sometimes I use Gunze C as well - the interior green in this case. Gunze Superclear III varnish. Airbrush is Iwata HP-BH. That's it, really. No extra skill or special technique, just patience.
Frankly I don't understand why would anyone use any other paint or airbrush brand, ever. Well, except maybe H&S for the airbrush.

Christian there is Eduard photoetch, it was thrown in the box by the seller, so why not. I didn't use all of it. It is very thin and delicate - which is great for seat belts and chains and such. Less great for the flaps (which I didn't use). wheel well and covers etc., where it is actually too thin for scale I think.

Cristian Bordina Vladimir, As I'm Italian, I can only congratulate with you for your amazing job. Italian camo is not easy, on a 1/72 it's even more harder. Your 202 it's fantastic !!!
15. September 2017 at 18:39:48
Alexander G. Well, maybe there is a reason why Iwata equipment is so expensive after all...
15. September 2017 at 20:32:51
Max Little It does not look 72nd at all. It's a beautiful model. I can't believe my eyes. The iwata was worth it obviously!
