Ford was the very first automaker to catalog and produce station wagons--starting in the spring of 1929. While Ford farmed out the production of wooden station wagon bodies until 1940, Ford's own Iron Mountain Michigan plant milled and shaped all the wood components, which were then shipped to whichever body company actually produced the body shells. After the bodies were completed, they were shipped to Ford's River Rouge MI assembly plant, and installed on chassis on Ford's assembly line. Consider also, that in the Model A years, Ford still relied on both Briggs Body Company, and Murray Body Company for many of their steel bodies as well. Briggs Body Company produced Ford's Woodie station wagon bodies from 1932-1939--with Ford bringing station wagon bodies in-house at Iron Mountain MI through 1951--the last year of real wood body panels on Ford and Mercury wagons.
