Trying a new technique with this one - black basing. Aim is to create a mottled/worn base coat with lots of variation ahead of the weathering.
First step was to build up the subassemblies then prime them all black using Mig One-Shot black primer which I had all sorts of issues spraying. Ended up thinning it down with Tamiya X-20A to get it to come out smoothly.

First pass with the basecoat Dark Ghost Grey (Vallejo Air 71.120) in a random and patchy coat to start the worn base coat. Plan is to add a blending misted coat of thinned paint to tie everything up one colour but with lots of variation "built in".

Oh, I like this!! Mixed up a 60:40 mix of Vallejo thinners with the Dark Ghost Grey as before and wound the pressure right down to about 0.8bar then misted it over the body in really, really light coats until it looked as I wanted it to. I could add a bit slowly and slowly to build up the opacity really easily section by section until I got it as I wanted. If it looked a bit too wet (too much thinners!) then move on to another section and come back. Lovely worn body and that's before any weathering steps. I like 😄

Gloss coat and some oil paint streaking/filtering. Kept it subtle as I didn't want it to look "striped" but to give the impression of weathering/leaks.

And the other side.

Legs with some light rusty coloured chipping on the feet. Ready for a clear coat then a bit of a wash to match the upper body.

It really did work 🥳. I like this technique *a lot*.
Love to make them dirty/worn and this gives a brilliant base to work from. Hopefully, the dot filter to come later will give the streaking over the top of that lovely worn paintwork with loads of tone variation.
Can you tell I liked this 😂
