Before the RAF had a dedicated "Desert" colour scheme, this Hurricane was painted with Mid Stone to cover the Dark Green and Sky underneath. (It was originally Dark Green, Dark Earth over Night-White) Later they began using Azure Blue for the lower surfaces. It was already in North Africa for tropical climate trials when hostilities began in Europe.

Poor old L1669 got worked real hard early on. Probably looked even worse than how I have depicted it.

Album info

Early in WW2, Air Commodore Raymond Collishaw was in command of 204 "Egypt" Group of the RAF. He was given one Hawker Hurricane to go along with the outdated Gloster Gladiator biplane fighters that comprised his squadrons. It was an early fabric wing model that was also converted to "Tropical" status, one of the first three Hurricanes to be so modified. This is a replica of that aircraft. It was nicknamed Collie's Battleship.
