A first for everyone. What you need is more practise but that's normal. What to do in order to improve is much thinner putty n' dippin' the tool in water more often.

Second what Urban says. Not bad for your first try! But, next time try to get the Milliput on in a much thinner layer, it will get more "dimensional" when pressing your tool in.
I also wet my tool not with water, which may react with the water-soluble Milliput, but by dipping it in alcohol!

Thanks for the feed back. I used my fingers to spread it. On the turret I wet my fingers and tools in water, which helped a lot. I will give the alcohol a try when doing the touch up.

Pics would be nice indeed😉
@James, StuGs had often the "Waffle-"Zimmerit, it´s a bit harder than the pattern normally applied on the Tigers... wich one have you tried?

Fabian, I just dragged a straight line effect with Tamiya's zim tool........I got better at it towards the end.....I've just primed this "pig of a build" and will post pics soon......
What method or tool would you suggest using for the waffle pattern and could you post a pic of this pattern? Thanks!

Shure, there is a tool by MIG, but i´ve made mine out of air clay and used a saw to get the pattern in. It´s basicially the same, but the air clay is 100% cheaper 😉

I´ve made a guide for the pattern used on Tigers and Panthers, can be done with the tools you have at home: wettringer-modellbau..c+methode#post479725
(If you need help with the translation, feel free to ask)

If you like, i can do to the same for the waffle pattern, just need to find the tools 😉

Thanks Fabian! It's too late for my current build, but I'll be sure to heavily consider this method should the opportunity arise. Thanks again, sincerely......JVJ

No problem, i´ve just tested this method on some left over plastic, but the results were quite good, so i´m also wainting for the next Stug to fall in my hands😉

Well don't get Dragon 9038!! It's an alright kit i guess, instructions filled with "Dragonisms" compounded by the fact that it's a Dragon "Imperial" line........other companies' kits boxed up by dragon.........

never had a real Dragon kit, just reboxes by Revell... but already heared about their instructions... but i had already an eye on this: Sturmgeschütz IV (Italeri 6491, 1:35)
I´ve got their updated Jagtpanzer IV, which is quite nice, so I´m hoping the same for the Stug, but I´m mostly buying stuff by change (on Sale or 2nd Hand), so it might take its time to get a Stug

That's how I got this Stg, about 7 euros........the same guy who found this for me has just bought 34 aircraft kits for me........assorted, I haven't seen them yet....mostly 1/72 scale....some old, out of production, some still in plastic.....I'm getting them for about $7 each.......

Fabian, I have one of the older boxing's of that Stug IV. Nice kit but without the PE. Love your how-to on the zimmerit, I'll have my wife translate it for me😉

Album info

My first go at applying my own zimmerit. I used milliput starting with the hull, then the turret. I think the turret application went better as I had more practice.
