Nice work on the two trucks and a great result with the green decals. Have you ever thought about a plotter to make masks and spray paint these markings instead of printing the camouflage color around?

Okay, I purchased the Silhouette Portrait about a year ago, it´s perfect for this kind of stencils. Anyway, your solution with the decals works also perfect.

Daniel, what is the smallest size of cut that the Portrait can do? Would it work for this, like 2-3 mm stencils?

I did 4mm for my Oshkosh Tanker, that works fine. I think it will depend on the chosen font and the masking foil but 3mm should work anyway.

Yesterday I started with the APA startup truck, but almost directly came to a complete dead-end. There are some long, thin and spidery PE parts that need to be bent very precisely in shape and to which a dozen other spidery parts need to be added. It is even worse: the parts are attached to the fret by more than a dozen attachment points, and they proved more or less impossible to remove without messing up the parts. I am by no means a stranger to PE, but this is clearly waaaay beyond my skill level. I would dare to say this is only for the top 1% model builder clientele. I might try to use something else later, but for now I just call it a day.

There are moments when I think about some form of "base & background" for my kits, this definitely is one of them!

Thumb ups and handclaps, stunning work, especially the canopy cutting part. Those hand scribed panel lines scared me off from buying one though... (Still better than floggers from KP probably?)

Doing some back-pedalling to fix some issues before I continue... there are some serious fit issues with the ramp assembly, so I have decided to display it closed instead. A pity, but at the same time a relief, I was not too happy about the inside detailing anyway.

Cuajete, thank you! Yes, the MisterCraft kit is horrible even in small doses... But it is pretty obvious that Airfix has prepared for the possibility to produce the PF without a huge effort: all the subtype specific parts are nicely separated on the sprues. So I don't find it impossible that they will make one at some time.

I have never tried to sand it, although I have polished it with Tamiya Polishing Compounds a few times, and it worked fine without peeling. On the other hand, the Gauzy Glass Coat (the orange jar) does lift easily with masking tape. It can even be peeled off with a wooden cocktail stick (which can be a good thing if you don't get a smooth layer).

I spray generously thick layers of very thinned GX, so first it levels and then most of the thinner evaporates. But this can only be done over safe surface (e.g. enamels are excluded).

Thomas, same as Lukasz. I thin it at lease 1 part GX, 5 parts MLT. Then apply wet (but not runny) coats, two usually.
I would wait some 10 minutes in between two coats, which is just finishing the full plane and refill on varnish.
If I need a glass-like surface I would "polish" it afterwards with a wet application of clean MLT.
But applying it wet to metals, it will eat them up in my case. And I can't have thick application of metals, otherwise black base has no effect...
I work with AK Extremes mostly, tested also Alclad Stainless Steel with same effect.
Have to check one last Gunze silver chrome...

Thank you both for your great tips! I think my mistake is that I apply the varnish too thick and do not thin nearly enough. For metal surfaces I find that Gauzy or Alclad Gloss works the best, but I have a few upcoming projects that call for a super glossy surface on top of acrylics, so I will give the GX a new test run.

Thomas I normally open a new GX and pour it whole into a 50 ml dropper bottle, then add MLT until its thin enough, usually I'd fill the whole bottle. Add a steel shaker and good to go for a year or two, I don't need to mess with lid cups and measured thinning...

Erik, I have never built the Heller kit, but I understand that it has raised panel lines, wheras the SH kits have recessed ones. Besides this, I think both are fairly accurate representations of the J-21A. To build the J-21R in 1:72, your only choice is really the SH kit, unless you are prepared to do a fair amount of scratchbuilding.

Judging by the unassembled kit, it looks really neat, with a well thought out molding gate pattern and no particular flash. Some ejector pin parks here and there, but at hidden places. The interior is a bit sparse, but I ordered aftermarket stuff for it. The canopy is a one piece affair (closed), so I ordered a vac-formed open canopy. The decals look outstanding. It should be a pretty simple build really (but a rather ugly aeroplane).

Before doing anything else, I began with replacing the most obvious raised panel lines with my own scribed ones. I will definitely not replace every panel line, as a lot of them should actually not even be there. I expect this part to take at least a few weeks as it is really a slow and arduous task, but it is somehow strangely satisfying.

Bernd and Harry, I will try not to disappoint!
Łukasz, thanks for the tip! Revell Aqua is unfortunately not available from my local hobby shop, but I was told that Vallejo fluorescent orange would be a good match. Anyway, I bought a bottle of the Vallejo and also a jar of Acrysion Fluorescent Orange, and will test later which one is better. TBH, I think both look far too vivid, so I will probably need to fade them with white and yellow for a more realistic look.
