After what they did to the F-16 this Tomcat is a bit of a disappointment to me (and I only speak for myself). I'll wait for the Revell reboxing of the Hasegawa kit 🙂

The reboxing of the Hasegawa kit by Revell was a joke unfortunately or maybe just wishful thinking. Tamiya have produced what many say is the ultimate F-16 in 1/48 and I agree with that for what it is worth. With Hasegawa doing just about the whole Tomcat family, Hobby Boss having a fair stab at it and AvantGarde Models (of the MIG-31 fame) announcing they plan to release the F-14 I think a Tomcat without "flappery", "slattery" or any other gimmicks is a bit stale. I think the Hyper Scale review on this site sums it up very nicely. Yes there have been plenty of Tomcats, yes they have more features but this is a TAMIYA Tomcat ! As nice as the kit will undoubtedly be to me it is not a second Viper. Again, my personal opinion only and not meant to criticise this fantastic company that has given us so many gems over the years.

Tamiya have missed a trick with this Tomcat release, I know that their 1/48 range is traditionally flap & slatless etc. well mostly anyhow, but this was an opportunity to raise their game and the barre against the competition whilst overcoming their tradition of flapless 1/48 models....
This F14 should have been all singing all dancing with engines and crews and every access hatch a separate piece etc. etc. anyhow, Tamiya have missed a trick here :/

For me its not important to have slats and flaps and overswept wings. To me its important to have a smooth build and the right shape. And Bretts build has prooven some incredible fit and wonderful surface detail. Thats why i love Tamiya and thats why i want this sweet, adorable kit.

.... 🙂 very true Holly,
but it is something that is within the reach of Tamiya to do and had they done so it would have been the top Tomcat in 1/48 town, ah well, still a nice model though 🙂

You know, Choppy, when i opened the box of the fine HobbyBoss F-14B i was a little bit shocked about all the possibilitys and open hatches you can realise with the kit. To be honest, it stops me from building it because i´m just a lazy modeler.😢 So this Tamiya offering is just perfefect for me.😄

And i´m looking forward the AMK kit. Should be easy to build, too!

The truth is the truth, buddy. B**bs are b**bs and a Tamiya kit is a Tamiya kit... So the circle is closing...😉

@Holly, don't you have sometimes the craving to go, and i will not say an extra mile, but an extra 500 miles on a kit.
