I have a version of this kit that clearly states in 3 places on the box that this is a 1/144 scale kit. On the box's side panel, it says 1/144 scale twice, and on the instructions, it says 1/144 scale.

The timeline confirms your finding - there are indeed re-boxings which claim this to be in 1:144 scale.
... and welcome to scalemates!

Thank you for acknowledging this oddity about this kit. I always thought it was a 1/139 kit for some reason, but the box had me questioning it. And, it's nice to be here, lots of interesting information and graphics!
