Urban Gardini Yes Erik! The Shah was tired and irritaded over the fact that both Soviet and Iraqi MiG-25 RBT's repeatedly violated Iran's air space at free will without being challenged by Iran's F-4 and F-5 fighters as they just couldn't do so. But when the Shah saw the F-14 at an air show he decided then and there that he in the F-14 had the solution to the problem. My personal belief is that that's the main reason as to why Iran's fleet of F-14 Tomcats only was wired for the AIM-54 and couldn't fire the AIM-7 or AIM-9. It was probably just thought as a one problem solution. Strange though considering that Iran already had both the AIM-7 and AIM-9 system for the F-4 Phantom II.
