Event details

Name:
37. INTERMODELLBAU Dortmund, Germany
Town:
Dortmund DE
About:
The INTERMODELLBAU exhibition will set new standards in terms of size at the ‘Messe Westfalenhallen Dortmund’ Exhibition Centre from 15 to 19 April 2015. Two impressive large-scale models – the flying boat DO X and a Boeing 747-400 – with lengths and wingspans of more than five metres will be the stars at the worldwide largest exhibition for model building and model sport. The German Interest Group for Large Glider Models (IGG) will show several glider models in the scale of 2:1 at the experTEC exhibition taking place at the same time (17 to 19 April). They will be man-carrying models as Bernd Strassburger from IGG explained. The trend is evident in all cases: Large-scale models and high-quality scratchbuilt models are becoming increasingly popular.

The twelve-engine DO X flying boat with 159 seats, was the world’s largest and most beautiful passenger aircraft in the 1930’s. The legendary classic aircraft has long since secured its place in aviation history. Especially because only three DO X aircrafts were built and the project was stopped as early as 1934 after a spectacular representative flight around the world. The Dornier aircraft will have an impressive appearance as a large-scale model at the INTERMODELLBAU exhibition: With a weight of 60kg, a wingspan of 4.8 metres, a length of 4 metres and twelve four-stroke engines. Besides a Boeing 747-400, the Dornier aircraft will be the main attraction of the ‘Airlines and Multiple Engine Models’ presentation in Hall 3B.

Model maker Michael Bräuer from Wiesbaden designed and drew the monoplane as a model with twelve piston engines positioned in six nacelles, tractor-pusher style, strut-mounted on top of the wing, using old pictures and original sketches and built it in 1,500 hours, all on his own. Bräuer used plywood as material. “Scratchbuilding is gaining ground. Individual aeromodels are preferred. The trend is evidently towards high-quality model flying,” said Ludger Katemann, Vice President of the German Model Flyers Association (DMFV).

The DO X model built in the scale of 1:10 is driven by twelve four-stroke engines with a 10cm³ piston capacity and 1.11 horse power, running on a mixture of methanol and synthetic oil. Model maker Michael Bräuer has been on tour with his fully airworthy model at flight shows for one year.

If model-building dreams could fly, the Boeing 747-400 would definitely be a candidate. The large-scale model has impressive data. Length: 5.43 metres. Wingspan: 4.95 metres. Height: 1.48 metres. Weight: 68 kg. The drive consists of four model turbines that produce 14kg of thrust each and run on kerosene. Top speed is 120,000 rpm. The turbines can be slowed down to 25,000 rpm during landing. The construction time was about 18 months.
