Steve Luckinbill Thanks guys, I wasn't sure just how it would all turn out. This is my first destroy and remake project. To save cost, I made the decks and bulkheads out of cardboard. I went so far as to install some leftover PE watertight doors, although in this light, there's no way you can see them. I'm hoping some museum may want to display it. I just don't know how to go about doing that. Maybe the Yamato museum in Japan, now wouldn't that be amazing? I couldn't hope for anything like that.
26. June 2015 at 15:04:35
Lee Fogel It's certainly museum-worthy, Steve. Why not contact them directly?

Steven Baerselman Not including some stuff I did as a kid, this is the first model I bought. I can't remember how but I was suddenly inspired to start scale modelling again. Anyway, bought the kit, and started it. At the time though my son was beginning to move around by himself, and we were in a little 2 bedroom apartment with nowhere to keep the kit, so it went onto a shelf, half completed and out of grabbing little fingers :D. Took some years before I took it back down again and completed it. Used tamiya paints, with some spray cans for the base painting. Also used some tamiya acrylics in pots (oh little did I know!) to try to do some touch ups. Well all things considered, (and it WAS the first kit i've ever painted) it didn't end up looking too bad.
12. December 2015 at 12:23:37
Stefan Suessemilch Hi hagakure, thanks to let us know this story. A lot of modelers went rhrough the same, starting as a child and regain the hobby after a long break (myself included). It would be nice to see some pics of your model ;)
12. December 2015 at 16:03:28
Steven Baerselman Am planning to do so :) I can only offer pics of the completed model now though, none taken during construction. And bear in mind this model I did without referencing any information on the internet haha, so there is no weathering etc. Will endeavour to put some pics up this week, will be grateful for any comments on what I can improve. If its possible to add some weathering (like rust stains, exhaust blackening or a depth wash) even after applying a sealing coat? I'm Steven by the way.

Udo Browarczik Impressing. Alway a pleasure to watch your WIP, Agihs !!! Inspiring...... I´ll have to dig into my Stash to find my Yamato + Lion Roar......... Inform Mother, when i´m not back witihn the next days....
30. June 2015 at 08:45:55
Holger Kranich Hi Aghis! Great WIP! Please tell me what you use for glueing the pe parts. A needle? A Wire?
Actually i use a wire on a toothpic. That works quite nice for me. Recently i got myself the CA-ndle from Uschi van der Rosten but i think that only works for bigger areas...

Hellas! :D
30. June 2015 at 09:37:01
Bart Goesaert very nice build on this one... a bit late for following, but I'm in at the moment...
30. June 2015 at 10:07:50
Aghis Barberopoulos Thanks to all of you guys. Holger, I use toothpicks most of the time.

The painting takes a lot more time than I thought, so progress is slow. A combination of airbrush and paint brushing with acrylics and oils is required to get the depth needed.
30. June 2015 at 15:22:44
Christian Bruer .....look much better after they are replaced by the Northstar models ...... Yep they certainly did Aghis. Don't worry about slowness, the final result is it worth!

SMW Show brill at Telford this weekend - you would love it - as for ship build I see you using as many things as you can find to restore this kit - good effort - while you at it rub your tummy and pat your head at same time - ha
12. November 2013 at 00:36:39
Barry Lloyd Looking forward to see some photos from Telford. I think I'll be building the Yamato on a budget but wouldn't mind the stick-on decks. It's going quite well, I used the Revell filler, it's mighty powerful stuff! I bought some Vallejo filler yesterday, still to try. As for patting my head, I can't do two things at once, I'm a bloke! Anyway, back to the wet 'n dry paper, for some more rubbing down of those joints!
12. November 2013 at 18:54:27
Christian Bruer Hi Barry, don't know if you'd like to use a PE set, but take a look to White Ensign Models PE and Correction Set (new resin funnels) for Trumpeters HMS Belfats kit! Looking forward to your progress on any ship model ;)
6. February 2014 at 20:37:40
Barry Lloyd Thanks, I didn't realise there were aftermarket products already for the Trumpeter kit, I'll check these out!
6. February 2014 at 21:15:33
Christian Bruer Flyhawk made a set as well
6. February 2014 at 21:19:49
Heico van der Heide Things look nice. Very clean build.
7. February 2014 at 08:37:30
Barry Lloyd Thanks Heico, I normally do armour but thought I'd have a go at ships - makes a nice change!

1:350 IJN Yamato (Tamiya 78014)

3. November 2013 at 10:44:24 Share
Barry Lloyd Yamato is progressing well. Tamiya IJN Kure grey is now sprayed, I used a single coat on top of Halford's grey primer - great stuff and relatively cheap. I hope to paint the red hull soon but I need to glue the rudders on first.

I've bought a 'Hunter' wooden deck set off Ebay, not opened it yet so I don't know if it's self adhesive, or how easy it will be to fit. It does include a chain and some PE, all for 15 GBP including postage from China - hopefully it will look good when fitted.

This is it:

ebay.co.uk/itm/170915507806?..mp;_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
5. December 2013 at 08:47:21
Barry Lloyd The hull is now painted red and I've been working on the wooden deck. Unfortunately, the veneer deck is not sticking well to the matt painted deck - I should have glossed the painted plastic first. I've lifted the veneer and given the deck a coat of 'Future' polish and re-attached the deck. I've then put a coat of 'Future' floor polish on the deck. There are still some signs of lifting so I'll re-check in the morning before deciding what to do next - it may require some contact adhesive. It's a shame as the wooden deck is a perfect fit and looks great but could have been a bit stickier.
30. December 2013 at 16:08:30
Christian Bruer mmhh I missed that so far. Interesting story about that model, heavy cracking on the plastic parts but a very good repair job. She comes out very nice Barry! Cheers, Christian
30. December 2013 at 16:31:07
Barry Lloyd Thanks Christian. I'm hoping I can get the wooden deck glued down - I haven't used a wood deck before so it is a steep learning curve for me.

Barry Lloyd More (slow) progress on Yamato!
4. February 2014 at 18:38:33
Christian Bruer Hi Barry, very nice progress on your Yamato. I also like you saved her from the scrap yard ;)
4. February 2014 at 20:28:11
Barry Lloyd Thanks! It's good to be able save her, I'm enjoying building my first 1:350 ship and it's a good one to start with - it makes a change from tanks!
4. February 2014 at 21:11:53
Christian Bruer Wish to see more in the future - ships ;)
5. February 2014 at 20:43:44
Barry Lloyd I now have the Trumpeter HMS Belfast in my stash although I do need to finish the Centauro tank destroyer that I started last year before I begin building Belfast!

Holger Kranich Hey Aghis, my friend! I´m pleased to see that your work has started. Just like Christian, i´d like to see some pic´s of that impressive ship. I´ve seen the aftermarketstuff you´re gonna use, is going to offer you many many long evenings of work! You started an etch-battle! Crazyness crawls down my neck when i even think of all the AA-Gun´s! But i´m sure your Yamato will be dedicated with some goldmedal´s when the next ipms-competition starts! :) :) :)
10. February 2012 at 14:41:32
Aghis Barberopoulos I will post photos as soon as I have interesting assemblies to show. The PE sets are excellent, they really give a boost to the old kit. Some scratchbuilding is also required - stay tuned ;)
10. February 2012 at 16:00:30
Mathias Carl Nice one.
I think I will stay tuned in, so that I´m not missing any update.
Looking at all the stuff, you want to but that just leaves me thinking: Whow :o

T.-O. Meyer Hi Duncan, are you going for the "Lion Roar" or "Pontos" Detail Up set?
30. April 2012 at 20:28:57
Duncan Cook Hi Tim,
No first: I don't have the money for the parts and 2. I'm not good with etched parts.
30. April 2012 at 20:52:04
Holger Kranich Despite the money, it will be a nice exercise to learn how to use pe´s! ;)
30. April 2012 at 20:55:18
T.-O. Meyer Yes that is true. 150 $ when you buy at LM, even more in Europe....
But I bet this baby will look awsome, whith all the metal on it ;)
30. April 2012 at 21:24:08
Holger Kranich 150 bucks for the pe´s? I wont spend that!!!! Even when it looks better wirth them!
30. April 2012 at 21:49:41

Peter Segers ik was eigenlijk geinteresseerd in de nieuwe release van Tamiya's yamato. Is dat deze?
25. January 2012 at 11:56:04
Wilfried Bogaerts Peter, I think the new Tamiya Yamato has kit nr 78025, better check before you buy as this is not a cheap kit ...
25. January 2012 at 14:24:35
Aghis Barberopoulos The old one is cheap, but if you buy all the goodies to update it to today's standards the final price is similar to the new one (without any extras). I am not sure if the new one needs any extra PE, wooden decks etc ?
25. January 2012 at 16:39:07
Peter Segers Hi guys, thanks for your replies and sorry for not responding fast enough from my part. I just explained to another 'scalemate' that I'm really fond of ship models (sailing and modern), specially because of their awesome showecase look&feel. But my biggest problems are too many to go forward with ship modelling: lack of time, I'm lousy with rigging and cables, lack of showcases which are big enough (you need at least 80-100cm for most of them), etc etc. If I could find someone who would make them for me.... (doesn't sound good coming from a scale modeller doesn't it?) :)
Nevertheless, in spite of these blocking problems, I still look forward to any release of these ship models. My modellers' heart still gets warm by thinking of it and looking at pictures of guys who have built one.
27. January 2012 at 16:19:27
Peter Segers just found out on the internet that the new tamiya yamato flies by at 200-300-400 to even 1100 usd !!! One thing is clear: it's a most wanted thing, but prices are currently freewheeling in all directions.
27. January 2012 at 17:19:41
Aghis Barberopoulos I think I will stick to the old one and spend more time to fix its shortcomings! :)
27. January 2012 at 17:21:12
Peter Segers good idea ;)
although, and as I said in my previous message, when you look at the pics of the new model and compare it with the older one, well..... . It's like putting a warm nice piece of meat at one meter from a dog. Guess what it will do ....
27. January 2012 at 17:24:44
Aghis Barberopoulos I am sure the new one is excellent, Tamiya's quality is unquestionable. However, the old one has good quality plastic and with the proper drawings and PE sets one can turn it into an excellent model too. I will post pictures when I am ready.
