I have been an avid FULL HULL ship modeler for decades and I have always thought very highly of Trumpeter's 1/700 ship offerings and their 1/700 aircraft. I appreciated the fact that in the past they offered a choice for those who wanted to build their ships either as a waterline or as a full hull. They even offered blue water bases in some models. That was value! Now without notices all their new kits are waterline only without any clear indication on the box.

I think Trumpeter has gotten a bit too big for their britches and are taking on airs. Not only are they over-pricing their new 1/700 releases but they are being coy and using subterfuge to hide the fact that all their new 1/700 ship kits are waterline only kits.

As an example take a look at the current Trumpeter web site for the 1/700 HMS Nelson description indicating Lower Hull.
trumpeter-china.com/index.ph..;a=show&id=3100&l=en

Released Date 2017-11
More Features:
- Lower hull made from multi-directional slide moulds. ***THERE IS NO LOWER HULL ***
- Deck wood pattern finely rendered
- Contains engraved name plate
- Photo-etched frets included

I got burned on this one as I eagerly went out to buy it only to find that there is no lower hull as advertised.

All the other manufacturers like Academy, Aoshima, Dragon, Fujimi and Meng are going the other way and producing beautiful 1/700 FULL HULL model kits. La creme de la creme is the new Flyhawk 1/700 offerings. Flyhawk gives you a CHOICE (hear that Trumpeter?) between waterline and full hull. Not only that but their deluxe version include wood decking, photo etch and sometimes even brass barrels. Even the non-deluxe kits have plastic-molded details that put photo etch to shame. Now that is value!!

My advice is if you want a wide range of 1/700 Waterline subjects buy Tamiya and go to town on aftermarket stuff. You will still spend 50% less than the new Trumpeter releases.

If you want the best of the best go with Flyhawk they are the "Bandai" of ship model manufacturers. Their selection is not as wide as others but it is expanding. There also some gems in the full hull kit offerings from Academy, Fujimi, Aoshima, Dragon/Cyberhobby, Flyhawk, and Hasegawa.

Lode Schildermans Hi Martin, in what camo do you intend to do the Rodney? Greetz, Lode
26. July 2017 at 17:04:29
Martin Oostrom I'm thinking yours ;)
But it's 700 so that might be too challenging.
26. July 2017 at 17:12:29
Lode Schildermans I'm looking forward to your choice :)
27. July 2017 at 15:35:47
Martin Oostrom Tamiya's instructions only show the portside camo. If you've got it, could you mail me the starboardside?
27. July 2017 at 16:04:27
Lode Schildermans Profile morsky apparently brings the Rodney's scheme out at the end of August, Martin. Usually portside, starboardside and topsite. Mostley, they bring the drawings out in 1/700, 1/350 and 1/200. It is what I am waiting for :)
28. July 2017 at 17:06:36
Martin Oostrom I just found this picture on trumpeter's website: [img1]
It's accurate enough for my 1/700 I think.
With a bit of fiddling around ;)
Thanks Lode

Phil Lord What a fantastic build, certainly inspiring! I want to try using the Airfix kit as a basis for HMS Rodney. The LCT casting has lots of promise too. Have you seen the book "D-Day Ships" by Bufffetaut (1994)You could stay busy for years of building D-Day variants. Great imaginative job you have done there.

Carlos Santamarta Oliver Super, hiperfantástico. Toda mi admiración para el sr. Vitchenian.
22. April 2015 at 11:46:47
Christian Bruer Indeed an excellent work by Remy. I most like the lifelike painting and weathering. Thx for sharing DFGH!
22. April 2015 at 17:52:55
Aghis Barberopoulos 1/600 ? Great detailing at this scale, I thought it was 1/350 at first...
22. April 2015 at 18:01:44
Christian Bruer He only builds in scale 1/600:
ORP Blyskawica | IPMS Fine Waterline
finewaterline.com/pages/gall..ips/rveskdale/rveskdale.html

I like his work very much and I am inspired by his lifelike painting and weathering skills. Sadly I never met him personally.

22. April 2015 at 18:09:10
Aghis Barberopoulos I know what you mean by 'lifelike' painting. It looks really great at a distance, but a little rough at close inspection I think. It depends very much on the perspective. I think it is the approach used by Kostas Katseas below

modelshipgallery.com/gallery..nhorst-700-kk3/kk-index.html

22. April 2015 at 18:21:29
Christian Bruer Don't forget it is scale 1/600. The small scales most look a little bit rough at close distance.
23. April 2015 at 20:13:38
Carlos Santamarta Oliver "La belleza es lo primero de lo terrible que los humanos podemos soportar " R.M. Rilke. Aunque se trate de una maqueta.
The ORP Blyskawica es,también,bella, fantástica. Terrible !

Christian Bruer Hi Thomas, very nice start on HMS Nelson. The kit seems to be highly detailed out of the box. Nice plating on the hull and nice details on all the other parts. I guess the PE comes with the Trumpeter kit? If so you did not need aftermarket PE to build a nice model of these extraordinary ship(s).
So I'm in and sit down to follow your progress.
Cheers, Christian

Christian Bruer Hi Thomas, just one note to the Typ285 radar atop the HACS Tower - to see detailed in photo 11. The radar should pointed forward and not aft. The tower itself is pointed correct, but not the radar antenna. You can see this as well on the following photo - dated February 1945.

John Coverley I often wonder why the "Rodney" has never been produced by the big companies in 1/350, while other ships with a less active service have. My dad was on the "Rodney" and last year got his "Arctic convoy" medal. Good book to read is "HMS Rodney" by Iain Ballantyne.
8. July 2014 at 08:38:37
Steven Van Dyck Hi John, I am honoured to get into contact with a relative of the crew of the Rodney by this way, so I decided to add a lengthy photo album. The arctic convoys must have put much strain on the crew of the ships, your dad must have been very proud on his medal. For the build of Rodney, I used the large Nelson drawing in the book of Hugh Lyon. You can find the complete build log at modelbrouwers.nl/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=34745&f=4.
8. July 2014 at 10:47:30
John Coverley Hi Steven. Unfortunately my dad was unaware he received this medal as he was suffering from dementia and died a few months later. Never really talked about much about the war even though he had a few "Stars" including the African Star.

John Coverley Hi Steven, just had a look at the build log. Lots of pictures of the real thing that I didn't see when I was doing a bit of research when I built my Rodney quite a few years ago. Interesting story I came across on the internet and in the "Rodney" book was an incident during the D Day invasion. The Rodney was asked to give support fire to the troops near Caen. After numerous rounds of 16" shells the army asked when the Rodney was going to stop its barrage. The officer in charge asked how many rounds did they request and was told 75. The Rodney had fired 69 at that point so the officer sent a signal that they would fire another 6 more rounds to complete the 75 requested.
Unfortunately when the radio operator on the Rodney saw this he just happened to mention that it wasn't 75 rounds but 15! He had written his number 1 like a 7. As 16" shells were not freely available like other rounds this incident was taken very seriously.
I had an uncle who was in the army in that area and he used to joke about the navy constantly shelling the area.

Steven Van Dyck Sorry about the loss of your father. I remember already having heared from his decoration and his sickness on another site where you had announced it, maybe the Ship's Forum where I have also an account. The story you describe is curious, I wonder how long it would take Rodney to fire sixty rounds extra, but they would have stayed airborne probably long enough to give it a head start. So that's why Caen was in such a mess on those pictures...

Christian Bruer Nice work and interesting buildIng blog. Good to see some more Shipmates over here!

Steven Van Dyck Thanks, Christian. This build has been finished for a while, but I currently have three more ships on the workbench, 1/350 Tamiya Bismarck and 1/700 Yorktown and Hammann, so in a couple of months they might show up here.

Steven Van Dyck Thanks, Choppa. You like ships too? Check out my Ark Royal album...

Choppa Nutta I pretty well like it all to be fair, sci fi, tanks, aviation, figures, dioramas, the weird and the unorthodox :)
Sea scapes are particularly interesting, modelling something as elusive as water, very clever :)

Steven Van Dyck Myself I also have a broad interest, having built ships, planes, tanks, a train, bikes and animals. The water in this diorama is made with tinfoil, Vallejo Still water and ecoline paints, the waves are made from silicon kit and painted white. Because of the tinfoil it's all quite shiny...

Steven Van Dyck I forgot the trucks.

Choppa Nutta tin foil is a neat trick, one idea I had if you have a vac former is make a mold of the water scape and then vac form a clear blue plastic surface and paint it with semi transparent paints and illuminate from underneath to get those water caustic reflections on the side of the hull :)
8. July 2014 at 12:06:55
Steven Van Dyck I've got a collegue doing vacforming but that's getting a bit high-tech to me. With my CVN-71 kit came a readymade waterline plastic foil, but still I painted it matte because it is in fact too shiny while having all those waves on it.

That is a model which I would like to build in the future, too. The uncommon design is very interesting.
