Holger Kranich Moin! Da steht Dir aber etwas Umbauarbeit ins Haus, oder? XPBM-5A zu PBM-1? Aber Du machst das schon, Bernhard. Ganz Scalemates steht hinter Dir! ;)

Bernhard Schrock Hej Holger. Prime Time & first row seat!
27. March at 14:49:32

Kelly Wellington A minor delay on the Bristol Blenheim brings on the need to break out this baby, just waiting there on the shelf, staring at me. I opened it and, boy does it look nice on the sprues. I hope it goes together as well as the parts look good. The decals, however, are less than impressive. I wonder, has anyone made an aftermarket set of decals for this craft? I haven't opened my Mach2 Martin Mariner to look at those decals....
28. February 2014 at 05:59:23
Kelly Wellington Best fitting clear windows I have ever dealt with. The bombay constructs are a mite tricky come the wing assembly and I'm having to sand a bit.
4. May 2014 at 18:34:35
Kelly Wellington Okay...So I've assembled the fuselage and the wings and the tailplane. This is a very nice kit. Fairly forgiving for a novice like me. I've had to do some very minor fit fiddling, but all in all, it's great. Now, I'm at the point of assembling the engines and cowls....I have a choice on the cowl flaps of up or down. I'm no sure which to choose, as I'm not clear as to the meaning of the flaps in the two situations. I'm probably going to do it as a 'beached amphibian'...with landing gear out and down.
10. May 2014 at 19:22:07
Gordon Sørensen Looks good so far! Do you mean cowl flaps at the rear of the engine nacelle? They are open for better engine cooling on the ground, usually closed while in the air.
10. May 2014 at 19:49:01
Kelly Wellington So...fini.

I would recommend this kit to any practiced novice. It goes together quite well. Satifying fit; top rate kit.

29. March 2014 at 17:08:10
Dave Flitton Yes, let's see want you can do!! I haven't even opened mine.
29. March 2014 at 17:38:08
Phil Marchese The 5A was a post-war Amphibian as opposed to late war fyling boat. Only four experimental conversions were built during the war. I hear the kit gives the block outs to build the flying boat. Just saying this early on because it may drive your choice of configuration or markings. Some -5 flying boats had large 3-blade Ham-Stnd hydraulic props verse the Curtiss Electric four blades too if you are particular about a certain a/c. Otherwise, it will be fun to see this one fledge. (From what I ve read and seen, you may wany to consider a wing spar too. The saddle arrangement has several drawbacks.)
29. March 2014 at 20:19:18
Kelly Wellington Hey, thanks, Phil. I've been oblivious. I was thinking 'Mariner' and not taking into consideration the evolution from the PBM-1, through the PBM-3, which were the wartime versions of the Mariner. I'll be following the kit directions for the 1945 version, in wheels down. They provide both sets of props.
30. March 2014 at 01:04:55
Kelly Wellington Dry assembly of components...fuselage, tailplane, wing assembly, engines, props, turrets. I'm in the midst of putting the wheels on, in down position. Next up, radome and tailcap. It is going together fairly well. Only a mite of fiddly with the leading edges and with the front turret insertion. I upped my supply of late war Navy colors today.

Phil Marchese Note the boxart is the P-boat rather than the amphib. Only four (4) wartime XPBM-5A and 36 post-war amphibians built. Reviews indicate blanking plates for the seaplane are present. The saddle mounted wing and lack of any mainspar, particularly outboard bodes caution and indeed both buildups I ve seen exhibit anhedreal outboard. Something around the cockpit appears amiss in the models too. Weird "sub-variant" choice. The PBM is big in 1:72 . But its a Mariner, so with care, its welcome. Size and price don't lend this plane to multiple builds so it will be interesting to watch how Minicraft proceeds here with value and variations.

Dave Flitton May be true but this is a brand new molding. I just hope it is accurate enough to build without problems.

There is a review of this kit over on ARC by Scott van Aken, then a mention on Oldkits website with a price of $156.00. I just picked on up in Johannesburg for $16.00. I'm in the process of building it for the Seaplanes/Floatplanes Group Build on Britmodeller.

Holger Kranich Hello Juan!
Its simply unbelievable for me, how someone can have so many kits in his stash! If i may ask, how long do you collect now? And where do you store it? Impressive... Congrats to such an superb collection!
Cheers!

Juan M Leria Hi Holger,
I started in this hobby around 1970 (when 5 years old) and for many time I hadn't stash, just build as they where purchased/received as present.
My older brother (18+ than me) was a freelance designer and worked at home, so when I was teenager I did some works for him and I had a very healthy ecomomy for my age.
I bought and build almost the full range of ESCI 1/72 armor kits in a summer! A matter of weapons race for wargamming (ended the very day I arrived with the Leopold :-D, built and painted in a journey).
Later I started to improve my skills and my output dropped, but still I was able to build 6-8 per month.
By this time flourished the 'Not available syndrome': -'Hummm... now I'll build the Hasegawa's F-14 released some months ago...' and when going to the shops.... sold out everywhere!
So I started to buy BEFORE finishing the kits in progress.
Later arrived my beloved Carmen, the output dropped in half... and the stash began to grow.
By 1996 Ivan was born, and any kit took me around four months to finish by lack of time.
Daniel was born in 1999 and I've just finished a model since then.
My hobbyroom (I have a room for the hobby!) has become a mesh meanwhile and just I can't work now :´-(
I'm in the process to put all in order, taking pics of all kits, scanning all I can (Hallowed be the Xerox 7500!!!) to save space.... I hope I'll can back to real modelling next summer!!!

Holger Kranich Same with me, in my choldhood i buyed and builded, one by one. For some models, i just needed two days with letting the paint dry. So the output was heavy, too and my mom always angry when she saw that i brought a new kit home. It still rings in my ears: "Holger dont spend so much money for plastic, save something! You´ll need it for later times!"...
Year for year, i was building and building till i became 15 years old. Everything was more interesting for me than modeling. No, not everything, but girls! ;) So time went by, and with the birth of my son, i came back to it. I was searching the net for some stuff for kits and found a site called: Modellversium... In a fraction of a second i was horny, äh hungry for modeling again! Now i´m back since 5 Years and i will never ever stop.

Hopefully you will find time to do some modeling, would be great to see some of your work. :)
All the best and cheers, Holger
