You know, I'm inclined to agree with you! you also got me thinking about the people. I took a picture from straight over the model. Will print that on photo paper, laminate it, then cut the letters out and glue people to the laminate! Should work the treat without losing the look of the flite deck, or messing up the flite deck with glue.

Thought you can skip the mid part of the internal tracks, no-one will ever see it anyway...
Not sure that cuts the expenses, but the workload maybe.

haha, well I did actually go and look at a review of those AS-90 tanks and I did find myself thinking -
"mmm, a fine collection of left over greeblies" :D

The kit bashing thoughts that went through my mind went something like...

make the turret as per and use the upper hull and sprues to carve up into four legs for a squad of spider tanks or.....

use two turrets back to back for the basis of a mech suit Ma.K. style ish or .....

use four turrets and barrels as four shoulders and legs, take two upper hulls back to back for the basis of the body and greeblie up and use those spare decals to decorate etc. or ....

make a space freighter in the esque of Chris Foss and cut up everything for some interesting surface detail .....

I can see some speeder bike potential in there too :)

I think I might need more kits for all the ideas floating through my head !! haha :D

Another idea that springs to mind is that this made make one very cool coffee table if you were to scale it up to 1/144 scale :D :D :D

I had a feeling it was going to look like that... I had some similar thoughts... a walking four gun barrel monster... a Star Wars Death Star dio for my 1/144 collection of Bandai kits? Who knows?

After studying the images of the carrier a bit more, I think he tank treads will have a sort of tray fit over them, so none of the tops of treads will be visible. That will likely mean I can repurpose their unseen treads elsewhere. If I really want to push it, I could probably use the same tank kits for the middle front and back. If I do that, I'd need 5 kits total - 3 three for all the outside edges, and two for the inside front/back. That might work. One of the reasons I chose this kit to work with is that the tank treads are plastic and separate pieces (not a rubber strip), so I have total control over their placement. Or at least that's what I tell myself. ;)

Well, I had nearly $10 in ebay bucks so I bought this one new for $14.95 shipped. Looks pretty good! Still waiting for the Italeri Nimitz, Tamiya Enterprise cv6, & Trumpy Hornet. So far the Dragon is far superior. They will all be fun to build & display!

Oh i can remember that kit so good... I finished it within two days and finally i placed it on my bed to begin with my carrier ops, my mother came in and placed herself on it... She apologized 1000 times but i was angry as sh*t... LOL :)
7. October 2016, 07:47
Roy McKay
It's an old kit but a goodie. Not 21st century but looks well when done. Detail is soft but is basically accurate. Kit represents shp around 1965 to 74.
7. October 2016, 23:29
Robert W Martel
Hi Guys, like your comments. After reading all the reviews I could find I decided to go for it. One reviewer rated it as "excellent" which I think is a bit overstated....but, I think it looks pretty good too. Everyone says it's pretty accurate. The big disappointment to me is the aircraft. But I'm supposing as long as it looks good on a shelf from a slight distance, it'll be just fine. Maybe when I get around to building it I'll have to get some of the newer clear molded planes and maybe some PE. That should make a big difference. It was cheap enough, so..... I can't afford or have room for the big 1/350 kit (much as I wish I could). Good thing I have a big magnifier 'cause some of the parts in these 1/700 ship kits are teeeeeeny.
Holger, sorry yours got "squished" lol, & Roy, yea 65 to 74 was my teen age era, so I like things from that time.
8. October 2016, 03:02
Roy McKay
Built mine around 1985 (my teen era!) and still display it. Got seriously damaged recently thanks to my german shepherd and the neighbours cat. Not fatally but enough to need a drydock period. As I have another 2012 issue of the kit in the stash, was thinking of converting the original 1985 model into something resembling the final fit of the real ship at decommissioning. The only issue with the aircraft are the Phantoms really. I plan to build the second kit as 1975 fit with Italeri F-14s and other Italeri 1/720 aircraft. VF-1 & VF-2!
I personally wouldn't bother with the clear 1/700 planes. I've got them in the Trumpeter 2005 Nimitz and used them on the Fujimi 1/700 Kittyhawk. They look good but they are VERY fiddly. And sit too tall unless you shorten the legs; try cutting less than a millimetre from a part that is maybe 4 mm long. And don't talk to me about masking 1/700 canopies.
Do get the GMM PE set though. That makes a big difference to the model.
8. October 2016, 18:51
Robert W Martel
Yea, that might make sense Roy. I haven't built any of these yet, but I see the planes are pretty small. I was thinking more like painting around the glass with a brush??? HA! I'm sure masking will be near impossible!! We'll just have to see what happens when I get around to one. Probably won't be for a while yet. By that time I'll have a dozed different ships! I just ordered the HobbyBoss USS Kearsarge LHD-3. It just looks cool!, lots of neat vehicles & such. More itty bitty stuff. Not sure I'm even going to be able to handle stuff that small!! I may be biting off more than I can chew!!! lol

Last time I was at Hobby Lobby there was an Academy 1/800 Kitty hawk on the shelf, the plastic & price tag were gone & one end of the box top was tore open. I looked inside, it was all there. So I asked the cashier the price (they all know me I go there so much). The floor manager let me have it for $13!
Anyway after getting it home and looking it over I thought it looked pretty good. Looking at kits and reviews has got me real interested (though I've looked before).
Now I'm on a flattop kick!!!

Many ships here at the moment – I like it
In which configuration / time period you'd like to build your Big E?
5. January 2016, 19:34
Yari Brunings
Hi Christian, since i have struggled to get any other decal options for the airwing i have decide to use the post major refit in '82 as the period. I would have preferred a more recent period but decal options restricted me.
5. January 2016, 20:59
Christian Bruer
Hi Yari, may you know Starfighter Decals?!
CAW-8, 2001:
ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-55434581667841_2272_9872086

They have some more CAW but from the 1960's to 1970's where you've had to back date your Big E

Cheers, Christian
7. January 2016, 18:09
Yari Brunings
Thanks Christian, i looked at them but with exchange rate of 16 ZAR to 1 USD it would cost almost as much as the actual carrier cost me 2 years ago! Then also the additional hornets and helos would mean more importing at that crazy rate. Had to go for the option with the least additional purchase but at least it will be accurate, the other option was to use Nimitz air wing decals I could get much cheaper but would really annoy me knowing it was not correct.
7. January 2016, 18:50

You're welcome Yari and yep I agree.
