Share Kelly Wellington Well...So far, I've managed to bung up the dorsal turret. It's kattywampus and there's nothing I can do about it. Otherwise it's going together reasonably well.
13. April 2015 at 04:41:23
Kelly Wellington Oop...I spoke too soon. The main landing gear assembly is pretty fragile. I cut it out of the sprew and then squeezed it on to the assembled wheel....the two struts are held together with a fragile 'x' of fine bar which, if over manipulated, like placing on the wheels....broke in half. I had to glue the struts in to the wheels and set it up so the tiny spot where the fragile broken bars join can be delicately glued and allowed to set up. Still to come is even more fragile and ever so tiny support struts for the wheel fenders. *sigh*

Kelly Wellington So...I'm nearing the end of this kit assembly. *chuckles ruefully* And I'm not proud of it at all. First of all, the dorsal turret is in cattywampus. The fit of the fuselage around the turret is poor. The landing gear were a challenge, but I think I did okay, even if they do look amateurish with gobbets of dried adhesive. But the coup de grace was when I was placing the many itsy-bitsy decals and I realized that I had put the exhaust manifolds on both engines (six total) on bassackwards. I thought them curious when putting them on, but I obviously seriously misread the instructions.
*deep sigh*
Another for the toy bin.

A couple of cool kits in the stash.....like to check them out some time. Catch Ya, Logan

Ken Kolenovsky Hi Logan! These 2 are the ones I got from Mike. You can take your pic of which ever one you would like. I already own both so these are extras. I believe the Do 217 has an extra forward wing/body section in it? Very peculiar!

Kelly Wellington Note here that there are four sprues. Compare that to the Trumpeter Vickers Wellington GR Mk.XIV kit, also on the workbench at this time, which came with ten plus sprues.

Kelly Wellington Oh...I'll be doing the E-5 version, complete with the glide bomb, which seems to be one entire sprue. Any way, it's why I got the kit, as one of the rivals of the Coastal Command.

Share View full thread with 14 commentsAndy Bertrand I love these older Italeri kits - I think of them as very 'honest' kits - about as good as they could make them for the time. Compared with what Airfix were churning out at the time, they have some nice crisp detailing (and plenty scope to add a bit yourself!)
They're great for my level of experience as panel lines need scribed, but the fit isn't always as good as it can be so you also need to be a dab hand with a wee bit of filler!

Philip De Keyser Awesome result Andy, you've got a eyecatcher with this one, great job, it's always nice to see these old kits on the bench and turn out as great project

Share Aghis BarberopoulosI like the paintjob on this Do217 E-5. By the way, There is an original BMW power ''egg'' as installed on Do 217 in Tatoi, Athens. Have detail photos if anyone interested.
