Love the laser cut parts! I'm building the optional floats as amphibious versions. I hope to 3D print an engine.

1:24 Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior, 6x6 and 5x5 aircraft wheels I had printed by a friend. Turned out way better than I hoped. Super lucky to get this printed, I am not good at 3D modelling and I need practice building STL files.

Engine was downloaded from the link below and edited in Sketchup to remove a lot of the stuff I didn't think would print well.

Added a couple photos today, sorry for not posting more updates. Been trying to force this project through as it's been going for far too long. I am close to done with the primary color and will be able to add graphics soon. Tried chipping paint with hairspray for the first time and it went reasonably well. I can tell it would work much better on plastic parts instead of paper coated balsa.

Need to start working on the 3D model for the propeller and spinner. Those are the final parts I need to build.

The 3D printed propeller has been designed and printed. Came out way better than I hoped. Learning Blender a little bit at a time and it's an amazing program. The fact that it's free is crazy.

I have painted the outside primary colors and just need some black stripes before it's ready to attach the floats. Will have to make a custom jig to hold the floats and fuselage in place while the struts are attached.

I will paint the base color(s) and then lighten them and spray in random patterns to simulate paint fading, etc. Often this will be in the interior of the panels, thereby leaving the panel lines "shaded" and a bit darker. And since I'm adding paint all the time, it's a lot easier to fix a mistake! Hard to do when you've covered up your pre-shading and want to get it back!
1:72 scale airplane in a week? I wish!! :) :) :)

@Bill
I do mostly the same thing. By using filters by airbrush you can add subtle differencies in the camo.

thanks Christian.......!!
@ dave, the kit went alright, but you have to be aware that you have to drill out the fuselage where the pontoons mount. The default design is for wheels as I recall. There is no caveat for this except a wee, tiny statement tucked away somewhere within the instructions. Heavy seam lines on the pontoons..........other than that, no problems!

It's a great model. I assume not meant to be truly representative, as the British Army never used floats, skis or wheels.

Bit of whatif indeed, but the shaded camo looks grand.

Okay...I've survived the whole float strut thing....I think. I hope.

It's sitting under a notepad weight to keep the struts 'sprung' so that they are even close to the holes reputedly there for them. The glue is drying. A little paint touch up after it drys and I can move on to the decals and Dulcote.
27. July 2014, 18:37
Gordon Sørensen
Looks like a strong mount for the floats to be able to hold up that weight!
30. July 2014, 11:10
Kelly Wellington
The mounts were 'sprung' such that I needed the weight to push the struts down and hold them to the hole in the floats to glue them in place.

Sucko decals. That top one tore, too. I consider myself lucky getting out with just some silvering on the upper wing US ARMY decal.

Dunno how I'm going to finish this yet...Brit or US Army. I'd prefer to go Canuck, but it seems they didn't militarize it. I could just do it in my favorite colors and have it as a 'private' rig. I also have the Hobbycraft kit with the clear fuselage.
1. July 2014, 22:38

Hmm...I got rolling and forget to photo the cockpit setup. Six seats of two pairs of slightly differing sets, a floor level handle, a dual grip stick and molded instruments a huge distance away from the pilot/copilot seats. *yawn* I must admit that the pieces are fitting quite well and even the tiny aeliron (hinge elbows/weight arms) on the underside of the wings, along the leading edge of the aelirons, went on reasonbly well (with a good tiny tweezer).
5. July 2014, 22:52
Kelly Wellington
Oh...also a fairly decent pilot figure.
5. July 2014, 22:52

I should have known. I had early selected the floatplane version to do and, one arrived at that part of the assembly I was faced, once again, with STRUTS. I'd put the wing struts into place as though I would have no problems attaching the floats. However, Airfix seems to think everybody will be doing the wheeled version because they did not provide attachments for the float struts....

Drilling and fitting has been a minor nightmare. The model currently sits with a pad of notepaper to weight it down sufficiently to keep the rear struts in place while the glue sets on the rear struts of the floats.
27. July 2014, 14:48
Kelly Wellington
Crap decals, Airfix. *sigh* I went with the US Army set. I have spent way too much time fussing over disintegrating insignia. I have to split the underside 'US Army' decal because they early had me place protuberances where the decal is supposed to go. When on, the decals look a mite silvered, which I'm hoping will be minimized by Future and Dulcote.
3. August 2014, 23:06
Kelly Wellington
Well...through to the end, it turned out...sorta okay. Only a little silvering that survived through the Future and then the Dulcote. Still...crap decals.

The good old Airfix Beaver. On first glance, the kit has a somewhat rough and chunky appearance, but imho that actually does the kit good!

Nice kit, strikingly smaller than the Airfix Beaver. The fuselage halves are of transparent plastic; no seperate windows are included. Compared to the Airfix Beaver, the Hobbycraft kit has less surface detail.
