The 27th Armoured Brigade formed in late 1940 as the Armored component of the new 9th Armored Division. This Division, however, never fully fleshed out due to the need for men and equipment replacements in North Africa.
By September 1942, the 27th Armoured Brigade was reassigned to the 79th Armored Division and tested and trained on "Hobarts Funnies", an assortment of modified tanks for specialized tasks such as Amphibious tanks, bridging, mine clearing, and other battlefield engineer operations.
In October 1943, 27th Armoured Brigade became an independent brigade and attached to the 3rd Infantry Division for the upcoming Invasion of France. On 6th June 1944, the 27th Armoured Brigade and the 3rd Infantry Division spearheaded the landings at Sword Beach accompanying the first wave in 34 DD (duplex Drive) amphibious Shermans. Most of the brigade followed up in LCT's and was ashore later that day, but the objective (capture the city of Caen) was not achieved. The brigade was then to take part in a month-long series of battles to take Caen. On 18 July 1944, 27th Armoured Brigade took part in Operation Goodwood supporting Infantry assaults on villages on the left flank South of Caen. On 27 July 1944, 27th Armoured Brigade was disbanded, and its regiments reassigned to other Brigades.
