About 40 years ago my father built a Spitfire model. Watching him sitting at his bench putting the finishing touches on the kit is one of my first memories. For many years I admired that model: it was the archetype that I aspired to duplicate every time I built a model as a child. I wanted him to be as proud of every model that I had built as I was of that Spitfire. Now, approaching 40 myself and with a renewed interest in the hobby, I found the remnants of this model in a closet in my parent's house. Time, like it has a tendency to do, has not been kind to that kit (or me). For father's day, my mother asked if I would consider fixing it as a gift. I scoured the internet and found that the kit he had built was the old Airfix 1/24 Spitfire. My mom bought the kit and I quietly snuck the poor old Spitfire out of my parents closet and into my workshop. The repair job will be substantial, but I have a whole kit for spare parts, and have recently bought new decals and paint masks. I'm looking forward to getting the old girl back in fighting shape, and giving my dad back a memory that was so important to me as a child.
