CVRT FV107 Scimitar

Scale:
1:35
Status:
Completed

After several projects involving WW2 aircraft it's time to move to more modern era and switch to world of AFVs. As a first one I chose this little known english recon tank, primarily because I want to improve my skills with a relatively inexpensive kit and with a subject that is curious but not especially important to me.

Having examined the package cursorily, it seems that project will be a busy one (read: a lot of parts). This is my first experience with AFV Club and after ICM and Ark Model kits, quality seems much better. The only downside is that the tracks are made of vinyl.

pretty cool - I got interested in these from a magazine article that had some pretty good photos. It was not uncommon for the troops to paint a "smiley" mouth under the headlights..I can understand their temptation to do so!

I am planning to place my example in the Falklands '82 as very few vehicles were involved in that campaign. However, I haven't found many photos, especially in color. Admittedly, my search has just only started but it seems that since there were only few of these vehicles involved, there can be only so few photos as well. If anyone got any pointers, I'd be grateful.

BTW only four Scimitars were used in the Falklands along with four Scorpions and a Samson ARV...

Opened the box today and glued first few parts together. To my astonishment the fit wasn't perfect, good but not perfect. Then I realised that this must have been one of the first kits AFV Club did - at least that what I deduced from kit serial number AF35013.

Plastic is sturdy and major parts are of thick mould. After endless flash cleaning operations with ICM and Ark Model kits, this AFV Club kit is joy to build with almost no flash at all and so far all mould seams are very faint and in places that are easy to clean.
Main suspension components are in place and before adding road wheels, I got to paint first parts today. As instruction sheet has colors for British vehicles in NATO colors - which I believe are for later era than my example which will be set in Falklands - I chose to go with my own route with lighter green that matches color in reference photo. Ironically, it's Tamiya's XF-67 which is Nato Green. 🙂

I tried gluing vinyl tracks together and they did not respond to anything, not even CA would hold them. So as a last resort I am "casting" them into PVC glue knot. I will have to place that underside and cover it with suitable muddy terrain but it's just about my last hope. I knew it would come to this, having read about this in the forums.

Drive sprocket and road wheels are now on. Tracks seem to come OK, but true test will be only when it's time to install them.

Tracks have now been attached. Vinyl tracks went to place quite easily but shed some of the painting off in the process, meaning I need to do a lot of retouching later.

It's complete now - only diorama base remains but I will do that later. Scratch building includes antennas, periscope glasses and ropes on rear box. After cheaper ICM ad Ark kits this was joy to build, good solid plastic and nice details. Instructions had some mistakes but luckily so obvious that those did not hinder building at all.
