I believe it's a wooden mace. (Well, I assume it was made of wood.) I don't know the particular significance, maybe it was the symbol of the Hungarian unit? Basically the Hungarians were concerned about friendly fire so they used the tank as a mobile sign-post rather than commit it to combat!
