My modeling club had a $1 sale early this year and I grabbed a Bf-109 kit in a bag with no instructions. It looked like enough parts to build at least one aircraft. I did some research and determined it was a G-4. The stand that came with it identified this as a Hawk. It is a pretty good kit for its time except for all the rivets.
I wanted to do something different and I was not sure the kit decals would work. I found some profiles of aircraft turned over to the Italian Air Force and thought it would be cool to "paint out" the German Insignia like the Italians did. My references showed they painted out the insignia with Italian underside blue-gray and then mottled the paint with green. At the same time the aircraft was painted in the standard German RLM74/75/76. There was no cockpit interior so I painted the interior of the cockpit black, but still painted the framing the camouflage color. Throw in some white identification colors and I used 7 colors just on the base coats. I used some Tauro decal sheets for the Italian insignia and generic Luftwaffe codes for the numbers. What a great little kit and you don't normally see a model of a G-4. Since this aircraft can only be built with its landing gears up I added an in flight displayand used PropBlur props.
