Boeing E-767 AWACS: JASDF 84-3504
Converting 767-300ER into an E-767 AWACS

Subject:
Boeing E-767
JP 航空自衛隊 (Japan Air Self-Defense Force 1954-now)
602 Sqn. of Airborne Early Warning Surveillance Group 84-3504
2014 - Hamamatsu AB, Shizuoka
Scale:
1:144
Status:
In progress
Started:
January 1, 1998
Time spent:
4.0 hours to date

Once again, I purchased this kit already started (~50% complete) and thought to cut it down into either a KC-767 (Japan & Italy) or and E-767 AWACS (Japan). I had the spare AN/APY-1 radome from the Revell E-3A AWACS kit (built as 720B) and found enough JASDF decals in the spares bin for most of the markings. The project hung in limbo for 10-12 years, when recently, CTA released a E-767 conversion, which I will use, as the resin is better and more accurate than Revell's dome and the decals are complete and excellent. I will also add FotoCut antennae, drain masts and engine fences.

Hey Dutch, I had this idea a few years ago. I have the Hasegawa kit and got a decal making friend to upsize the kit sheet to 1/144. I can check the stash to see if I still have these. It would give you a complete set of decals for this project.

Yes, that would be very handy. I too have the Hasegawa 1:200 decal for reference. Just haven't devoted much time to this one yet.

Ray, Email is out for the moment. Very nice indeed! I could print my own white backgrounds easily enough. No problem on the roundels. Do you have a spare set of the entire sheet? I still have placement instructions from the 1/200 Hasegawa kit. R/ Dutch

I do have a spare set, were you able to get the scan of the sheet I sent you? I believe it is a copy of the full Hasegawa sheet, I don't have the instructions any more so I can't compare. They are yours, will sort out getting them in the mail in the next couple of days.

Ray, I received the CTA set No17 last month and opened it today. Is it ever so nice! Very finely molded resin, and two complete sets of decals. Now that I have finished the B-52G, I will begin on this hangar queen posthaste. R/ Dutch

Hey Dutch, I noticed from the captions on your pictures you are missing some nose landing gear parts. I have a started 767 that is being built wheels up (Remember my DHL freighter? its in the paint shop again). Let me know the parts you need and I can put them in the mail.

Ray, I will post photos of the nose well tonight. The u/c leg was glued into the forward fuselage, just the lowest bit of strut with the wheels is missing. I do not want to deconstruct the wheel well to replace the whole strut. I think that I will just super glue the oleo with wheels onto the existing strut, perhaps reinforcing by drilling into the strut and using fine wire or a pin as reinforcement. And I will send you something useful in return. R/ Dutch

Ray, I am reconsidering my options and may go ahead and completely remove the strut in the forward wheel well and replace with a new strut and wheels. What would be the cost of shipping your set from OZ?

Great work done here! I'll join the show 🙂

Ray, after careful examination I have decided to remove the nose gear strut and request your spare nose strut with wheels. Please let me know a shipping estimate from Oz before you do anything else. If I can get a SAC metal u/c for less locally, then I will opt for the cheaper option. K/r, Dutch

Ray, please disregard my last request. I will use what I have in the kit. Thanks for the offer.

Ray, good news! I found the missing lower nose gear strut. I will attempt to glue and reinforce it with sturdy thin wire. I will source wheels from the spares box. Do not send your parts. I will let you know if I am successful. R/ Dutch
