That's an unusual scale, at least to me.

It is an unusual scale. The mold was an old Comet mold from 1956. A lot of those old molds were "box scale ". They made the kit to fit inside boxes of a certain size. Made it easier for store owners to stock shelves because it was easy to tell how many kits they needed at a glance. Of course back then every nickle and some store and drug store had model kits.
