Album info

On 11 May 1940, the Germans belonging to the 1st Kavallerie Division, led by General major Kurt Feldt, appeared near the at the Frisian end of the Afsluitdijk. The Dutch managed to dislodge the first Germans with their machine-gun fire. It had to give the other Dutch troops the chance to retreat over the Afsluitdijk. In addition, the locks at Makkum were opened to flood the land. Due to the low water level of the IJsselmeer and the wrong wind direction, the inundation was not successful.

The Sd.Kfz 221 used at the advance to the Afsluitdijk, was a German light armored reconnaissance vehicle. A four-wheel-driven armored car on diesel, consisting of the sPkw. Horch 801 chassis, with a polygonal armored metal construction above it. On top of this basic model was a single 7.92 mm medium-weight machine gun. The design dates from the 1930s and was actually outdated at the start of the war.
