Album info

Populary known as the "Volksjäger", the He.162 was designed and produced by the war-torn German aviation industry in only six months.
With experienced aircrew, fuel and materials in desperately short supply this strikes as an incredible achievement.
On Setember 8, 1944 the Riechsluftfahrtsministerium issued a specification calling for a 750 km/h fighter to be regarded as a piece of consumer goods and to be ready by January 1, 1945.
Huge numbers of workers were seconded to the project and a rapid training programme for the Hitler Youth was mounted, using mainly glider aircraft.
Heinkel, which had build the world's first turbojet aircrat, the He.178, won the design competition with a tiny wooden machine with an engine perched on top.
The first prototype flew on December 6, 1944, and deliveries began in January 1945.
