Spitfire Mk Vb, The Fighter Collection, Duxford 2010

Album image #1
I used some really old tinlets of Revell paint for the light grey and dark green. The shades of the colors are different today, and they still used FS numbers in the 1980s, as opposed to RAL nowadays.

The satin sheen was accomplished by airbrushing a 6:1 mixture of Future and Tamiya flat base.

Album image #3
The custom made paint masks for the letters. The blue tailband will serve as a guide only, and was removed before painting.

Album image #4
Just before removing the paint masks. Will it be OK?

Album image #5
My attempt in reshaping the upper cowling to be a little more rounded.

Album image #6
The reference I used for this build. June 2010 at Schwaebisch Hall, Germany.

Very nice.

I have some Revell tins from the late 1970's that are still good 🙂

Hehehe, I would be surprised if today's paints last as long as the old ones. 30 years ago they had different environmental and health regulations (if any at all).

Great work! I really like the vinyl mask. I have some old Humbrol in a tin that must be thirty years old too.....

Thank you very much for all the kind words. It was planned to be a side project, but it turned out into the model on which I've spent most of my available modeling time on, although I've got three other projects waiting on the workbench to be finished.

Album info

I just finished this kit today.
Mostly built OOB. The only exeptions are that I reshaped the spinner and made custom vinyl paint masks for the letters, as I did not like the decals. I also reshaped the upper cowling, as it seemed too flat.
Besides the custom letters, I also added black wingwalks on both wings.
The model is G-LFVB of the Fighter Collection, based in Duxford 2010.
I was able to see it up close personal in June 2010.
