Nissan Skyline GT-R

Album image #1
Why the ejection pins have to be in the most visible areas, when they could have been at the other side (where they are not visible), is really annoying.....

Album image #2
Hate this holes in the pieces, just to save a tiny bit of plastic.....

Album image #3
Started covering this gap too.....even if it will not be visible later....

Album image #4
Almost there.... also changed the lever for a piece of metal

Album image #5
Ready for the BBQ....

Album image #6
Alclad primer the way I like it

Album image #7

Album image #8
Same airbrush session, same bottle, quite different results.... crap

Album image #9
I thought I had this ejection pin marks corrected.....
Primer looks grainy, but only because of the macro.

Album image #10
Nice detail but.....

Album image #11
Now is gone, you see the "ghost" of it after it has been sanded totally....

Album image #12
Nice detail too, but it has to go to be replaced by metal decal....

Album image #13
Ghost still there, it will not be visible under primer....

Album image #14

Album image #15

Album image #16
Better now, but not shiny.....grrr

Album image #17
Tried to apply the alclad color I was given in the challenge..... spat a big drop that eat primer and even plastic.... this is how it looks after cleaning all the primer, crap

Album image #18
And the plastic broke in the process....

Album image #19
Alclad small spill... almost melted this part away, but I think I can save it. Fortunately it was not the body or other important/delicate parts....

Album image #20
Changed my mind.... I will use the zero paint I had for the Porsche 911,I like blue. So Zero white primer it is. Not really convinced with results....

Album image #21
Ghosts vanished.

Album image #22
Most disappointing experience with airbrush, can not even get a decent even coverage, tried thinning, different pressures.... not the result I was hopping for

Album image #23
No, certainly no. I will give it another go again tonight....

Album image #24
Far from perfect but at least today airbrushing was a lot more enjoyable

Album image #25
It needs some sanding and lots of polishing, but maybe I can make a decent skyline out of it after all 🙂

Album image #26
Another layer of 2k today, one step closer to the desired result. I will leave it alone for a few days, then very light sanding to get rid of some dust particles, then, polishing

Album image #27
Dry fit seems good, needs some paint before I glue it to the hood

Album image #28
Lower part, this is not what i was trying to achieve....

Album image #29
This is more what i want (still need to correct some scratches)

Album image #30
So it goes into a bath with IPA

Album image #31
Long bath, but with some work and old toothbrush, all is gone (primer, paint and 2k clear)

Album image #32
No clear yet, but this is much better than before. Added some thinner to both primer and paint, and results are much better.

Album image #33
Boring detail, they did not put anything on the doors, ridiculous....

Album image #34
Let's start the butchery, I mean surgery

Album image #35
A bit of detail, quite some work still to make it look decent....

Album image #36
IPA bath, blue almost gone, primer still holding.....I will let it soak a while longer.....

Album image #37
Paint and primer removed almost totally

Album image #38
But column has been broken in two pieces..... since this may be hard to fix, there is not much to loose so....

Album image #39
Let's start the butchery......

Album image #40
Biggest piece of broken column, small channel made to make room for metal reinforcement

Album image #41
Album image #42
First piece in place

Album image #43
From inside

Album image #44
Second piece added, adjusting needed....

Album image #45
Some repairs still needed

Album image #46
Door open means cutting transparent part. I may not use the part that I removed

Album image #47
Reworked the cushioning of the seats, i may have gone a bit too far, but, it is done and milliput will be hard to sand down 😛. Also added openings for the safety belts. more work to be done in the front seats, detail in the sides have nothing to do with reality...

Album image #48
Not yet finished, but going in the right direction, I hope. more interesting than pic 33, that is for sure

How do achieve grainy finish?
28 June 2023, 11:16
Spanjaard
@CasModeler, do you want grainy finish? I am trying not to get grainy 🙂

I gave it a quick polish (3M Extra fine plus). It was looking a bit better, but i was still not really happy with it... but when I put it under the tap to clean the polishing product i had a glimpse of what i am after! it was when it was covered with water, i could see a totally different thing. Much closer to what I want to get with this model 🙂. i still need to give some paint touches, polish again probably, and then, clear. fingers crossed 🙂

lots of work needed , but it will look better and better 😍
14 July 2023, 17:32
Spanjaard
thanks Saeed! it is getting slower and slower, i have decided to add details in the interior... maybe I am procrastinating because i do not like the sanding and polishing of the body 😛 i am also stripping the paint of the lower part, i really did not like it. more pictures to come soon....

Did you use Mr Hobby Leveling Thinner? It helps a lot to achieve smooth surface because of retarder. Every stage of body preparing needs sand to 8000 grit paper. Air pressure should be 15 PSI paint to thinner ratio 1:1,5-2,0. It works good for me at the moment.
15 July 2023, 07:24
Spanjaard
Thanks, I used tinner but I guess not enough, it was pretty warm those days. Sanding and polishing up to 12000 in progress now.
15 July 2023, 07:56
CasModeler
60% thinner to paint is minimum...and thinner with retarder from mr hobby. 2 of 3 coats must be heavy wet. Its extremely important.

I theory zero paints are airbrushready 😛
15 July 2023, 09:09
Spanjaard
In summer, they certainly are not 😄
15 July 2023, 09:10

Case modeller, heavy were costs with zero paints may result in models melting.

Try 2k Primer. Prevents the Zeros/Number 5s/Street Blisters from eating up plastics.
19 July 2023, 12:56
Spanjaard
That is the one I am using. But I did not apply it correctly, or the paint was not done correctly (orboth)...., and after getting much better results in the second attempt on the lower part, I am stripping 2k, paint and primer. I was also tired of sanding and polishing, without seeing the light at the end of the tunnel....

You are really fighting this kit. Keep it up!
25 July 2023, 13:21
Spanjaard
As Chris Taylor said.....I think, looking back, that we did not fought the enemy, we fought ourselves, and the enemy was in us....
In other words, it is a good kit, and I have made a ton of mistakes, making it more difficult to myself at every turn.... but I am going to finish it even if it means buying a new body.....

I am hoping the Skyline can be saved. When a paint job goes bad it's so hard to get it back to a good state. Some of these newer scale model auto paints are just too volatile for plastic, imo. Hopefully it can be recovered here, good luck.

Thsnks, Dcott S, with the IPA bath, clear 2k, paint and primer are gine. Surgery on the broken column seems to be ok. Do it opened successfully, so it seems the patient may survive to endure new layer of paint. But I still need to work on the internal details, and pen the second part of the door

Deadline for the group build was wnd of July (after it was extended from end of june), but I ha e to finish it, right?

of course Martin. thanks Bobby for dropping by, even if this is an skyline and not an skyrice 😄 😄

Skyrice is an Australian slang/term to describe the JDM culture in Australia. Most modded Skylines are usually driven by JDM boy racers and usually asian - therefore Skyrice - to be clear I am asian and I do not get offended by this name. Some may get offended but to me its just a name. I had a skyline back in the day and my friends called it a "Skyrice" - just australians being australian

Thanks for the interesting info!! I really had no idea, and thought it was a type also I did not got anything when googled skyrice Google certainly doesn't know it all 🙂

Nice attitude there, Bobby. When I was over in Oz, I took some flak off the locals, for what my government was doing, here in the UK. I told them, I didn't make the decisions, the politicians did? They still busted my nuts about it though. Like you said, just Aussies being Aussie. To me, it seems like we all get along together, it's just the government types, who stir up the pot? And of course, they get richer doing it! Bet none of them, make models though? 😉
