WIP Bf109-G10 Croatia

Album image #1
Game on! The group build officially kicked off today and the contenders were allowed to crack open their boxes. Everyone got/was given one of the HobbyBoss Easy Assembly Bf109s, so the playing field is evened out. Up until last Saturday of May everyone can build their kits to heart’s content.

Album image #2
This is the plastic I’m working with. A quick rinse to get the mold release agent (something very particular to these kits) removed and than it’s time to build.

First order of business; fill the slots for the gun pods with sprue goo.

Album image #13
It’s not much, but there’s a spinner. I’ll use a Heller swirl as my only (planned) deviation from a pure OOB build.

Album image #14
While studying at a course I could clean up some parts. Hopefully this weekend I can get some paint on.

Album image #15
Whoohooh!!! RLM02 is on!

Album image #16
RC031 with a dash of MRP-103 on the exhaust stacks. I removed the brace inside the fuselage that holds this piece. That way I can assemble, sand and paint the fuselage and slide in this piece when done.

Album image #17
This side has a well defined wheel rim, the other side not so much.

Album image #18
Same for the main wheels. Not that well defined wheel rims. I guess weathering will take care of that. ?

Album image #19
Took a while, but eventually I glued the wings to the fuselage. Fit was generally good, but I needed some sprue goo to close some gaps.

Album image #20
Some panel lines need deepening after sanding back the sprue goo.

Album image #23
Hard to see in this light, but there are some panel lines appearing.

Album image #24
Same here, some sanding dust as a witness.

Album image #25
Alright! No way back now: it’s prime time!

Album image #26
I used Mr. Surfacer White with a hint of C113 to get a mustard yellow primer layer for the RLM04 areas

Album image #27
… and used a mix of Mr. Surfacer Black and Grey for the rest of the aircraft.

Album image #28
After a journey of yellows ranging from greenish to sunburst warm in tone I finally settled for a desaturated mix of C113 and C318 with a misting of almost pure C318 to find out my iPhone camera liked a bright yellow better…

Album image #29
I prepared a very lightened RLM76 from C117 with C1 and as I had nothing else to do than wait for yellow paint to dry, I started mottling the light blue on already. Tomorrow I will mask off the yellow sections and paint the light blue for real. The box art shows a brightly colored pristine bird, but the series of pictures in this album paint a rather faded, repainted and grimy picture. A lot of greys and greens to follow!

Album image #30
Working from tail and cowling inwards…

Album image #31
Apparently HobbyBoss has a more vibrant idea of this particular aircraft. ?

Album image #32
Slowly getting it all grimed up.

Album image #33
Album image #34
I chose Medium Sea Grey as the paint to overpaint the original Balkenkreuz.

Album image #35
The port side has a much larger patch overpainted.

Album image #36
I used the masks for the side to ‘overpainted’ the starboard Balkenkreuz using RLM83

Album image #37
I guess I’m done painting for now. Some details can only be painted with the decals is place as some overpainted areas are relative to the new Croatian markings.

Album image #38
Yep, definitely a different view on colors! 😄

Album image #39
Decalling made easy as the Croatians overpainted most of the stencils. 😉

Album image #40
There’s a distinct patch where some paint might have torn off. It’s easier to butch up or tear a decal than to reproduce real damage to a marking. 🙁

Album image #41
The window frames are quite vague, but somehow I managed to mask the Erla Haube.

Album image #42
A bit dark grey (RLM66-ish) primer and the RLM74 I used for the upper fuselage.

Album image #43
Et voilá! Only now do I see the actual frames and where my masking was off. Oh well…

Album image #44
The fuselage already had a heavy layer of soot. I need to shield the window panes again and soot up the canopy part.

Some preliminary pictures from this finished bird. I’ll have my brother have a go at it with his photo booth and camera setup later. ☺️

Following! ...
PS I usually build the aircrafts that fought against this, that surrendered in Falconara.

Hi Roland and Moreno! Glad to have you on board!
True, Roland, apart from the bland cockpits, I'm actually amazed about how easy these kits build and how nice the panel lines are.
Moreno, I typically build more Allied or modern stuff, but am quite interested in the plethora of colors and markings that were around in the desperate end of World War II. This is part of a group build where our club bought a couple of these Easy Assembly Bf109s, so a 109 it is! 😉

Great stuff Patrick.
Love seeing aircraft badged up outside of their usual markings. Captured or rebadged allies, it's all interesting. I did a Hobby Boss Mustang kit and have to agree that even though meant as beginners (probably) they are great for getting to the painting and are well detailed externally. Great work so far Patrick! The BF-109 looks nice with the Croatian "balkenkreuz".

Hey Gary, welcome! I agree, I'd rather work on a 'weird' color scheme as it is that more 'exotic'. And yes, those easy assembly kits are great as an external paint canvas.
Thank you Erik! Even though the Croatian 'Balkenkreuz' is highly visible, the German one is only sloppily painted over: double combo then! 😉

Really a nice work! Well done 👍
For the last pic: maybe you can recover the marking painting with a fine brush

😄 Thank you for your concerns, Moreno. 🙂 But if you look at pictures 7 and 9 you'll see that the actual aircraft had damaged markings as well. That's what I tried to recreate. But it's harder to create damage than building something that's intact. On the other hand, it's quite easy to destroy something unwanted. 😉

Moreno Baruffini
Yes, I understand, I was suggesting to 'create the damage" painting with a fine brush around and on the unwanted destroyed part. 🙂

BTW You made me want to start another plane that was around in the desperate end of World War II 🙂

🫣 I gotcha Moreno. 👍🏼 I wasn't into German aircraft that much until I found out the plethora of colors and options and grafted together aircraft from that timeframe. After this one, I got another colorful one-o-nine planned. ☺️
