Rando AutorSo, I've been wanting to build an early F-8 ever since I got the Muroc kit. The Muroc nose cone however is actually too long, in fact longer than the F-8Es(!?). A year ago, CAT4 released an early nose F-8 conversion kit, which seemed awesome, except it was poorly molded halves and shaped wrong. Months later, CAT4 released an improved nose, pictured here compared to an actual F-8 nose, and as you can see it still comes up short--literally. It's about 1-1.5 mm too short, and looks a little tall. It will definitely need a spacer and a shave down on the top half. Disappointing, I just wish someone could make an accurate early Crusader nose.

Rando AutorHere we go with the nose job: glued in a 1.5 mm spacer of plastic between the nose cone and the forward fuselage piece. Carefully aligned the nose cone. Now shaving down the profile. Particularly important is to eliminate that "hitch" that currently sits in front of the windscreen. It should form a much more contiguous slope. So I am now shaving down the angle of the nose. The CAT4 resin seems hard but it's brittle and delicate, I will have to fix a couple of chips on the intake.

Rando AutorThanks Mark! And thanks Nick, I actually got one that's 2 feet wide, since I wanted to make sure it fits a 1:48 F-101. Until now I've been taking photos with sheets of paper in my spraybooth and it feels kinda amateurish. Still have to set it up, but hoping to this weekend

Rando AutorAt this time I'm still uncertain exactly which F-8 I will build for my first CAT4 conversion, but this might be one of them. The Cutting Edge decal sheet I have is over 20 years old but is far and away the best possible version, as it's much more accurate than the SuperScale or PrintScale sheets. I'll have to test some of the nonessential decals on the sheet to see if it's still usable. If not I won't go with the Jolly Roger.

Rando AutorTurns out the little I tried from the sheet did not hold up at all. I'll try liquid decal film, but my past attempts with it haven't worked great. Looks like it might be Nargi's VF-111 MiG Killer instead

Rando AutorThanks for following and all the nice comments friends! Beauty shots are up now. I really like how some of them turned out. These two were a challenge, not exactly my best work but I'm happy that I saw this really specific idea through to the end, and they look really cool. I especially like the underside detail of the RF-8. Cheers and happy modelling!

Rando AutorCAT4 coming to the rescue with what seems like a nice set of parts that can backdate the Hasegawa F-8E. While we all really want a full kit tooled by someone, getting conversion kits is the next best thing, and the ones out there are all but impossible to obtain, and none of them really capture the shape of the nose very well. Not anymore, for the moment at least. Tonight I got a good look at the nose shape of the new kit and find it compares well to reference photos. Next up is seeing how it fits on the F-8 fuselage, which means some plastic surgery.

Rando AutorAdded some more photos comparing the kits with 1:48 F-8C scale drawings from the Muroc kit. So far I like the overall shape, but the front plate where the radome connects makes the nose a little too long overall. Might just need to shave it down and blend the shape some.

Rando AutorCAT4 has released an improved version of their nose. While the measurements don't appear to be perfect, it's better than the original and I'd feel much better about incorporating it into a kit. Seamless intake is a huge plus too 👍

Rando AutorI've noticed something frustrating about this Aeromaster decal sheet. There's a section of red missing from the "T" shape on the F-8H option. It looks like only the black outlines have been provided and so the only option appears to fill it in somehow, be it paint or spare decal? Either way, I feel like it would be really challenging to get the color to match perfectly. Has anyone built this or done something similar? Is there something I'm missing here? It's a shame because this is a really cool option I'd like to build but I'd only do it if I felt like I could match the decal color perfectly.
